3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle picked up at the Arran Distillery year ago. Pours a black ale with a coarse tan head - dissipates without lacing. Aroma heavy with rich dried fruits, vanilla, rather liquor-like. Taste is rich with dark bitter chocolate, vanilla and some roast coffee-like note and a bitter finish. There is a ’whisky’ note to it but not predominately. There is the alcohol level and its overall richness would lend it ideally to sharing a bottle.

4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Dark color with a red influence, and almost absent head. Aroma gives perfectly the feeling of aging in whiskey cask wood, malts, caramel, licorice, and a bit of alcohol. The mouthfeel is very similar, with roasted malts and some dried fruits. Flat carbonation and oily body, a great beer. Might be influenced by my love for barrel aged.

Dufter af røg og tjære. Sort øl med kun lidt skum. Smager røget nærmest whiskey agtig og mørk chokolade.

22.08.2012. 0,33l Bottle. Patrics Pub, Kristianssand. Black as the night colour with brown head. Very lively carbonated. Strong aroma of smoke and campfire. Very rich body with lots of dark malts and lots of strong whiskey flavours. Very good beer.

2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Picked this up for $12 a bottle at my local Co-Op at some point in January. Best before 8/8/10. Yes. Seriously. Enjoyed in a snifter at 65 Degrees F.
A - Our of the bottle, it’s a surprisingly standard brown appearance. Nearly black in the glass letting some light in against the light. There are some bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S - Big smokey vanilla aroma with chocolate and raisins on the nose.
T - Starts with this roasted malts, smoked malts and chocolate malts sort of taste. In the middle, I get some vanilla with a hint of copper penny taste. The finish is all metallic copper taste.
M - Mild carbonation, almost a heavy body but still pretty medium.
O - The metal in this is very disappointing. I’m also not sure how a best by 2010 bottle was sitting on my local Co-Op shelf. Oh well. It’s still drinkable, slightly oxidized and thinning just a bit. Overall, drinkable but not as great as the other Paradox BD beers I’ve had.

This had been aged at brewfellas in their cellar, Strong whiffs of whiskey, dark black pour with not a lot of head, Not as hoppy as when I first tried it, has become a lot more smooth with the whiskey becoming more dominant.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
A black beer with a medium, creamy and beige head. Aroma is strong, roasted, salt liquirice, some sweetness, also peat and barrels. Taste is roasted, liquirice, salt liquirice, peat, also in the aftertaste there are black coffee and whiskey barrels. Full bodied, easy and smooth to drink. Good and tastefull beer, barrel aging gives unique flavours, luckily barrel isn’t too dominating.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Got the bottle directly from the Brewdog website, an excellent deal if I remember correctly. The bottle did not have a batch # of expiry date and the back was printed in what I believe is Japanese. Should not make a difference just thougth it was worth mentioning.
A - Pitch black with a slight orange hue when held up to the light. Slight head that thinned out quickly and left very pretty lacing.
S - Chocolate, coffee, and oats are all present and they blend great with the oak and scotch that are more prominent in the nose of this one.
T - Oak wood, rich coffee and bitter coco right off the bat. Settles down and sweet malt takes over in the middle with a scotch finish that maybe a bit rough but is still quite nice by me.
M&D - Rich and full bodied, great silky smooth carbonation. Went down great and was a fantastic digestifs. The intense oak and scotch flavors at the end make this one tough to give higher marks on. Can’t say the Alcohol is well hidden, but at 10% it does a good job, especially if you enjoy scotch.
