4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Aroma: vinous, oxidized apple, dark malt, oak, bitter chocolate, vaguely sourish and tarry. Italian roast.
Flavour: Malty bitterness followed by sandy whisky-peatyness. Great. I love tha mineral quality of it. There is some sweetness, but mainly a huge depth from the malt. Very sourish aftertaste due to the roast.Slight saltiness. Pineapple. Awesome. The whisky is really there. I’ve never had Arran, but I get a sense of what it might be like. After a while you are left with a very nice, dry hoppiness in your mouth.
Appearance: Brown towards black with a tan, bubbly head. Both small and bigger bubbles. Nice.
Palate: Nice, aptly fizzy, yet thick & lathery & slightly oily.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle, 0.33l. Pours black with small totally diminishing light brown head and soft visible carbonation. Aroma of heavy roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, whiskey and wood. Taste starts with moderate sweet roasted malt, coffee and chocolate, follows by dried fruits and licorice, mouthfeel is warming alcoholic, while finish is moderate bitter. Not a paradox, just excellent...

3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a straight black, no head. Aroma is of coffee, malt, chocolate, peat, brine, hay. Taste of chocolate, espresso, bitter cocoa, milk chocolate, lots of malt. Honestly all of the other paradox beers we have had have been past their best by dates by several years. (will never purchase from that beer store again). Would like to try fresh again if at all possible........

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Visual: Pours coffee black-brown with barely any head, a thin layer of ultra-micro retention, no visible activity.
Nose: BIG roasted coffee caramel malt, very thick (lvl-10)-pungency
Attack: thicker viscosity, light-fizzy, slick
Mid-palate: thick-bodied, (lvl-7)-sweetness, (MAIN) persistent whisky alcohol detection, malt, cacao, chocolate, caramel, fig/date, coffee, soy sauce
Finish: deep-roasted coffee bitter, residual malty sweetness + lingering roasted bitter finish.
Summary: Solid depth of flavours and complexity, but more alcohol (as well as other subtle spices) come through as it cools down. Great overall brew but no distinct attention-grabbing traits particularly stood out, other than the whisky alcohol influence.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Sampled on draft at Hou Thou (they listed it at 10% so I am guessing this was the version even though it is retired) this beer poured thick, black and a bit oily with a large foamy dark brown head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was whiskey, anise, booze, dark fruits, chocolate and vanilla. The flavor was boozy - but in a way that worked - and was very malty with strong notes of vanilla, marshmallow and chocolate and hints of anise and more cognac than whiskey. Very long finish and the booziness grows almost to the point of distraction. Full bodied. Outstanding.
