Best before 2015
Pours a solid black with a thinnish tan head that leaves bfore the party really gets rolling. Smells of oak and vanilla with a touch of smoke, and a wee bit of caramel and roasted grains deep underneath. Taste is a little roasty and chocolatey with a heavy dose of smokey peat. Slightly earthy with a touch of vanilla and alcohol. This has mellowed a bit since the last time I tried it, and that’s a good thing in my mind. Medium to thick body with a light level of carbonation and a roasty oily mouthfeel. I enjoyed this tonight, but I won’t lie its not my favorite stout. It’s a lot less smoky than last time I tried it, but its still quite smoky. Might pair well with some pulled pork or a cigar.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Gurthnar (174) - SLOVAK REPUBLIC - MAY 6, 2012
Bottle. Colour is very dark brown, very close to black. Medium sized creamy brown head. The aromas, many as they are, hit you right out of the bottle. There is smoke, wood, fruit (plum), raisins, roasted malt, you can sense the sting of alcohol too. Whiskey-like maltiness. Mouthfeel is oily, The smokiness leaves an ashy feel in the finish. Too much smoke for my liking, but a bearable flaw. Taste is medium to heavy sweet, medium bitter. The finish is dry, ashy, medium bitter, light sweet, with warm alcohol.

33cl bottle thanks to 77ships! Pours an extremely dark ruby color with a white head that dissipates quickly. Smells of chocolate, dark cherries, and tobacco. A bit too carbonated for me; full bodied. Tastes of caramel, malt balls, booze, and dark fruits. Very tasty.
