4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap at BrewDog Camden, London. Pours deadly, oily black with a lively, creamy beige foam head. With just the slightest of swirls the beer comes back to life with the head as good as new. The aroma does not suggest the beer is as strong as it is. There are certainly notes of whiskey, but the intensity is less than I’d expect. Also notes of vanilla, burnt cocoa, wood and lots of dark, ripe fruits in the nose. The flavor makes you believe in the 15%. It is very sweet, yes, but there’s also a boozy sting that hits you right away. Once you get beyond the strong alcohol, there is some nice burnt wood character, along with raisins, dark cocoa, licorice, and mild peat. Full, full in body with fine tot average carbonation. Hot finish with the booze really stinging the teeth and all. There’s a long, oaky and burnt malty finish as well, highlighted with sugary, dark and ripe fruits, licorice, alcohol, prunes, light tobacco, earth, moss, dark sugars, toffee and molasses. This is a HUGE beer. A 1/3 of a pint is almost too much, but that’s what I’ve got. I do enjoy it, but now, afterr three beers in this pub on a warm Sunday afternoon, I am ready to go home.

Bottle. Dark black, slight head. Aroma is big dark roast, sweet, whiskey, wood, chocolate, booze. Flavor is similar...it is very sweet with a deep bitter woody middle and end. Feel is viscous then dry, dense, and dusty. Intense...and not easy but not that difficult. Nicely done

Bottle... Dark brown pour with a small, creamy, khaki head. The aroma offers lots of fudge and smoke - not necessarily peat smoke. Full-bodied with a silky mouthfeel and kicked-back carbonation. The flavor is tangy and acrid with a dark chocolate component. Finishes tangy, moderately roasty and moderately bitter. Bottle courtesy of biggsbowler!

Bottle from BrewDog Website. This inky black beer pours without any sort of head. It has a very thick oily mouthfeel, rich chocolate and liquorice flavours, notes of smoke, leather, burnt currants, vanilla and a whisky sweetness with a very powerful warming finish.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
330ml bottle from Brewdog.com (£7.99):
Strong chocolate aroma with whisky throughout. There is a strong alcohol/grain presence with rich cocoa and a touch of peat. Boozy with dark fruits making an appearance with vanilla right at the end.
Black with a thin, bubbly head on top that is half a centimetre tall and a medium tan in colour. Retention is pretty good too.
Strong, alcohol laced flavour that has a lot of whisky and grain coming through alongside some dark fruits such as plum. There is a strong, toasted malt taste that precedes an earthy taste that is offset with some prunes, dates and figs among others.
Full-bodied with a huge alcohol content as promised and has fairly lively carbonation levels considering this. There is a slight alcohol burn but smooth for the most part.
A true big beer, and one that packs a punch, There is a lot of whisky and grain throughout as expected but the dark fruits that feature throughout make it an enjoyable beer, although this is probably still a one-off for me
