3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Not real good. Nose smelled like sour bread. Appearance was typical stout. Flavor was smokey but not complex. The peat flavors were not as good as one would expect out of an islay scotch, they were muted by the beer, and the beer was entirely covered up by the cask. This was the worst of both worlds, where each component messed up the brew. The palate and the appearance give this beer an inflated score. The flavor was not that good.

(bottle - 330 ml - 2008 vintage) Pitch black pour with no head. Heavy smoke and peat aroma with some roasted coffee and dark fruits. Flavor is big and smoky at the start with a roasty middle and a peaty and roasty finish.

The fuck did I just drink? Peat, a terrible fire that ruined many lives. People going back to the remnants of the fire and being further traumatized.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poursa deep black color, topped with a beige colored head. Quite roasty aroma, some smoked notes and some alcohol as well. Starts sweet and roasty, followed by a fairly strong bitterness and some alcohol notes. Not bad, but very strong - take it slowly.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
BOD 8/8/08 - so this one has had 6 years to mellow out - lol. Pours used motor oil black with just a hint of dark ruby. No head to speak of, but considering it’s age, it is allowable. Wonderful nose of peat like smoke, oak and scotch. Underneath is some dark fruit (plum, fig). Medium body with no effervescence. The flavor profile is very intense, quite complex and surprisingly well balanced with all that is going on. It begins with an onslaught of peat like smoke over a rich caramel sweetness. As the smoke fades, oak characteristics are evident over an amazing burst of plum. The middle is where the scotch shines with that touch of smoke only it has. The finish is dry and just a touch sweet. A charred smoke like aftertaste lingers with just a hint of alcohol flavor. The alcohol coverage in this beer is amazing - just great scotch flavor with no grain alcohol astringency. An intense, flavorful brewing masterpiece that I wish I could have also had fresh.

3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
"past the best by date, but you really couldn’t tell. as with all of the paradox line, kinda thin and lighter in color than most impys. overdone with the smoke/peatiness, especially in the aroma, where it comes off as medicinal. but since this is a far lighter base stout than mikkeller black hole, this beer was easier to finish than the scotch barreled version of that beer. the ash character kinda overpowers everything else. while it’s not wholly unpleasant, i wouldn’t get this again."

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Had on draft at Craft and Growler: pours black like oil with plenty of khaki colored head. Scotch whisky on the nose, and lots of it, roast, coffee, and some toast; follows onto the palate. Finishes with more whisky. Tons of barrel on this one, love it!

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Heaavy toasted and burnt for the malt, moderate pine and earth for the hops and yeast, with notes of smoldering wood. Head is small, bubbly, which quickly diminishes with no llacing. Color is very dark brown. Flavor starts moderately to heavily sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes lightly acidic and heavily bitter. Palate is medium to full, syrupy, with a lively carbonation. and a moderately alcoholic finish. Has the smell of a campfire and smoky scotch. A very tasty and slow sipping Imperial Stout.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Strong roast coffee flavor. The beer is flat and monotonous. The first sip gives you this intense bitter flavor with notes of coffee. The palate settles after and stays monotonous.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 10/20
Sampled on draft at Hou Thou this beer poured a black color with a huge creamy brown head that lingered and left a bit of lacing. The aroma was amazingly strong peat, seaweed, campfire and salt. The flavor was strong wood followed by very strong peat and touches of oil, seaweed and salt. Tasted like Laphroig scotch. Amazingly long finish. Thick body. If you like Islay scotch you would love this - me, I detest Islays.
