BBB63 (3681), La Porte, Indiana, USA Apr 22, 2008 Bottle and served in my Stone IRS snifter (tasted along side of the 8 & 9): Nearly opaque with a small tan head which left spotty lace upon the glassware. The aroma has notes of chocolate, charred malts, caramel, cereal, plum, molasses, and very light wood with a dash of oxidization. I was expecting some scotch and peat but they were nowhere to be found and the only hint of the nose of BA is the light wood. The taste starts slight fruity and twangy with a chocolate covered raisins and blueberries. Found some notes of espresso bitterness and chewy grains in midsection before heading towards a lightly oaked and tannic finish. The mouth feel is soft and rich but a tad too thin for the flavor profile. While it is a nice beer I was left disappointed by the lack of Speyside character on the palate or nose.
DocLock (4047), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 22, 2008 Pours blackish with deep brown edges and 1-finger tan head and great lacing. Nose is Wheaties coated in brown sugar and dipped in molasses and scothc whiskey, plus molasses, cacao, oats. The nose is a bit like a juiced up Celebrator mixed with scotch whiskey and molasses. The taste is dark malty, with cacao, brown sugar, fig, molasses, and mild backup hops. Very well hidden alcohol in this, and the beer as a whole is amazingly smooth, complex and downright chuggable to the point where I had to force myself to savor it slowly. SSSteve (1450), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jul 20, 2008 a black beer with ruby highlights under a medium sized brown head. aroma of bourbon, wood, dark chocolate, and a dash of alcohol. the flavor comes out dark chocolate, caramel, and bourbon with touches of vanilla. a creamy, dry and woody finish. medium bodied. ChainGangGuy (1457), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Jul 19, 2008 Appearance: Pours a blackish, brackish body with a thin, short-lived, dark tan head.
Smell: Full dark malts aroma that’s both packed with chocolate and caramel. Waft of classy, top-shelf whiskey in the background.
Taste: Dark, roasty maltiness gives way to a strong woody, tar component and pleasant Speyside flavor. Late burst of caramel sweetness. Touch of booze. Small taste of vanilla. Chocolatey, warming, peaty finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium-low carbonation.
Drinkability: A fairly nice beer, it was certainly a treat and a breeze to finish when tasted after the 008. HenrikSoegaard (2901), Randers, Denmark Jul 16, 2008 Bottle. Creamy lightbrown excellent mostly lasting head. Black colour. Moderate malty and hoppy aroma. Honey and vanilla notes. Strong chocolate bitter flavor. Loads of vanilla. Heavy bitter long finish. Creamy palate. Great stuff. csbosox (945), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA Jul 15, 2008 11.2oz bottle, bb 06/06/09. Served in a snifter at a fairly cold temperature. The aroma is chocolate, oak, some fragrant alcohol notes, and some strong maltiness, almost like lactose-like. Deep dark reddish brown color with a wispy tan head. Initial taste is sweet malt, cocoa followed by oak and really light scotch flavors. Flavor is roast, cocoa, subtle but bright top notes that seem to be a little fruity, dark fruits, and some lingering tannins. Smooth mouthfeel, the alcohol and tannins help to clean up the malt at the finish. The whisky is very light in the flavor, which is typically a good thing for me, but I wanted a little more out of the flavor. Maybe I really wanted a different barrel, I do greatly prefer Islay’s...
