Commercial Description:
A beer of inherent contradiction. This heavy weight of the beer world is strikingly delicate with a white gold appearance. The light fruity aroma dominates the initial confrontation; lychee, kiwi and passionfruit all prevail with subtle nuances of cherry and strawberry. Don’t be fooled however by this smooth medium bodied ale. As it trickles down your throat as this wolf in sheep’s clothing begins to grow teeth. The bite comes as the bitterness builds and endures no matter how hard the malty sweetness of the alcohol tries to tame this ferocious beast.

Bottle: Poured a ligth ditry yellow color ale with a thin bubbly head with minimal retention and not much lacing. Aroma of bitter hops are dominating but not as much as your usual American IPA. Taste is also dominated by some US bitter hops with a light dry malt backbone. Full body with low carbonation. Lacking some character and almost closer to an APA then anything else.

bottle bought in Systembolaget-Stockholm. Appearance: golden color. Little to medium head, white and quickly collapse. Aroma: dominated for the floral hops smells, hints of grass, ruta and eucalyptus. Fruity smells like mango and kiwi. Flavor: ephemeral sweet-malty start, hoppy progress with medium to high dryness, some resinous and lasting. The hoppyness has reminiscences of flowers, chamomile, medicinal herbs and grapefruit skin. Palate: light to medium body, nice rough texture and medium carbonation. Remark: lovely hoppy taste. Refreshing beer, very advisable.

Bottle from Rumbels, past its best before date. Hazy golden colour with small white head, sweet citrus hop aroma, very floral. Big floral hop taste, short bitterness which lets this one down.

[330ml bottle from Tescos Reading] Original review, 27/12/2008, ratings 7/2/8/3/13: I had loved Brewdog Edge, and had been eager for some time to try more beers from this highly rated brewer. I was therefore pleased when Tesco started stocking Punk IPA, especially given the introductory price of 99p! However, I was immediately annoyed by the bottle - although not for the contrived reasons of the Portman Group. It stated that the brewer doesnt care if you dont like this beer - this appears to show astonishing arrogance and a disregard for their customers, and I immediately wanted to dislike the beer. I bet Brewdog would care very quickly if we all disliked their beers and stopped buying them! Anyway, it pours an odd pale yellow-amber with a wispy white head that leaves a lot of lacing on the side of the glass. The annoyingly prickly initial carbonation does ease over the course of the bottle. It smells very malty and yet very fresh. On initial tasting, you are hit by a fairly harsh bitterness. Fresh pine flavours come through, along with a hint of citrus and something medicinal. It is all pretty intense, and yet very refreshing. However, the lingering bitterness is just a touch too strong for my liking, and does detract from the good flavours behind. So, despite the annoyance induced by the label, Im forced to admit this is a pretty good beer, and to wish the guys all the best in fighting off the Portman Group. Re-rate, 24/10/2009: Strongly floral with sweet pineapple and buttered toast. Sweet and bitter and dry at the same time. Enjoyed this far more than the first time round, and have accoringly upped my rating. It’s still rather fizzy, and still a little too bitter in the aftertaste, and the bottle still annoys me, but definitely big on flavour. c4
