Commercial Description:
A beer of inherent contradiction. This heavy weight of the beer world is strikingly delicate with a white gold appearance. The light fruity aroma dominates the initial confrontation; lychee, kiwi and passionfruit all prevail with subtle nuances of cherry and strawberry. Don’t be fooled however by this smooth medium bodied ale. As it trickles down your throat as this wolf in sheep’s clothing begins to grow teeth. The bite comes as the bitterness builds and endures no matter how hard the malty sweetness of the alcohol tries to tame this ferocious beast.

Pours a pale translucent yellow with a one finger eggshell white head. The nose shows some citrus rind, a bit perfumy, floral, lemonrind, mild sweetness. Flavor shows some citrus rind, medium bitterness, a tad astringent, menthol. Palate is astringent and persistently bitter.

A little hazy, golden colored beer, with a thick white head. The aroma is piquant like nettle. It’s fruity like citrus with malts and some hops. The taste is less piquant. More bitter hops and there are fruits like citrus with some grassy. The aftertaste is dry bitter.

Golden amber in appearance. Smells of peppery hops. Peppery, resinous and bitter fruit flavour. Unsubtle, but very nice.

As punks go, this isn’t top tier - it’s no "Anarchy In The UK or "Blitzkrieg Bop", for example - but it’s up there - perhaps "Complete Control" or "Holiday In Cambodia". It’s worth a spin. Punk IPA poured a muddy caramel colour with a loose topping of suds. The aroma had some real zing - a huge improvement on 99% of bottled British ales. This really smelled remarkably fresh for a bottled beer near the end of its shelf life after the long journey down under. Lychee, passionfruit, root ginger, home-brewed lemonade and some classic British nutty malts. Interesting flavour mix - I’d guess English malts and US hops? A bit like The Clash vs The Ramones. Quite loose in the body but with a rasping phlegmy finish. Tropical fruits on a bed of chewy malts. Lychee, passionfruit, toffee, walnuts and a long, lingering bitterness. Pushing towards IIPA bitterness. Not a complete success but enjoyable drinking. (330ml bottle from Platinum Liquor, Bellevue Hill. Batch 179. BB 11/11/09)

(660 ml bottle (best by 07.07.09)) Pours surprisingly clear golden, maybe a hint of amber. Foamy, hoppy-looking off-white head. Aroma of resinous grapefruit with a little pine along with some vanilla and a bit of caramel. Mouthfeel fairly smooth, just a bit pebbly. Big, foamy sheets of lacing. Flavor of lightly biting grapefruit and a bit of pine over a fairly timid malt base of vanilla and caramel. Hint of fruit as it warms. Medium-high bitterness overlays and lasts through the finish and aftertaste. Almost seems like a weak big IPA more than a regular IPA. More American in feel than British. Not really bad but pretty mediocre esp. considering all the bravado on the label.

Draught at Birreria Paradiso. Nothing subtle here. Nothing too complex either. just hops. Lots and lots of hops. Didn’t get much from this one besides hops.

550ml brown bottle purchased at The Liquor Shoppe in Tygsboro, MA. Pours a murky light yellow body with nearly an inch of short-lived off-white head. Aroma consists equally of lemon, grapefruit, and caramel and toffee malts to balance. Tastes sweet and fruity, lemon, orange, and grapefruit from the hops are very present, as well as some pith and floral notes. Caramel and toffee make brief appearances, but are quickly overpowered by the pervasive hop presence. On the lighter side of medium-bodied with surprisingly low carbonation. Slightly more carbonation would aid the drinkability IMO, but otherwise this is a very enjoyable and unique IPA - glad to have tried it!
