COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle and keg: Filtered. Cask: Unfiltered.
Ingredients: Marris Otter Extra Pale Malt; Chinook, Crystal, Motoeka hops. IBUs 65
A beer of inherent contradiction. This heavy weight of the beer world is strikingly delicate with a white gold appearance. The light fruity aroma dominates the initial confrontation; lychee, kiwi and passionfruit all prevail with subtle nuances of cherry and strawberry. Don’t be fooled however by this smooth medium bodied ale. As it trickles down your throat as this wolf in sheep’s clothing begins to grow teeth. The bite comes as the bitterness builds and endures no matter how hard the malty sweetness of the alcohol tries to tame this ferocious beast.

NOTE: The recipe was changed at the end of 2009, and this version is no longer made, if you have a bottle with a BBD after 1.1.12, you should go to the "Punk IPA (5.4%)" version.

Bottle conditioned, 330ml, from Tesco in Banbury. Pale gold, slightly hazed with white head. The initial light fruitiness misleads the drinker into thinking that this will be an easy going beer, the intense dry hoppy flavours then force their way in, bullying anything else out of the way. Brewdog are great at this sort of beer, showcasing what IPA is all about. Good stuff.

Bomber (batch 001) dated 01/01/0? (smeared) from Ledgers in Berkeley. Brassy gold color with a good white head. The aroma is fruity esters. Near medium body with creamy carbonation. Flavor is kiwi/strawberry with something like ripe stone fruits. The malt is not all that noticeable. It’s rather different. Takes time for the bitter to really differentiate, but it does that nicely. Ends a hint earthy? Really very tasty. Heavy alc for the UK, not so heavy for US. Goes down a treat.

(33cl bottle) Hazy, pale golden colour with a blond and short foamy head. Very aromatic hoppy aroma with notes of apricot, citrus, grass and wood, rounded up with slightly sweet pale malt and a subtle grainy touch. Strong bitter flavour, medium to light bodied with a bone-dry, almost astringent mouthfeel. Soft pale malty traste with an astringent and quite harsh hops character that is intriguing on the one hand but also overpowering other more subtle flavours on the other hand. Brutally dry and bitter IPA, still a likeable one (16.VIII.09).

A Mes rate: 33cl bottle at Chris O’s Shindig. Clean blonde colour with a slight white head. Very sweet (but thankfully tolerable) aroma. Plenty of citrus and very herbal and grassy. A slight buttery note but it’s ok. American hoppy flavour. Slightly sticky but still remains enjoyable. Typically American actually. Loads of everything. Quite tropical too. Thick and full mouthfeel. Pretty good stuff I thought.

courtesy of Toni Flükiger hazy dark orange in colour and with a little elusive foam; aroma of fresh apples and pears, notes of almonds; good and regular malt body, fair but not aggressive bitterness; quite dry and long almondy finish, slightly fruity and flowery

Bottle, at London Shindig, August 2007. Very pale straw colour. Plenty of hop in the aroma - more herbaceous than resinous. Pretty much the same on the palate - more tropical fruit than grapefruit. Also some flowery touches. If this is aiming for a US IPA feel, it doesn’t quite hit the mark. Whilst, by UK standards it is very hoppy, by American US standards, it is not. And the hops have a more grassy feel than the resinous/pine character often found in US examples. But I don’t mean to be critical. Whatever its trying to achieve, its a nice beer.

Bottle:Hazy, pale golden, small white foamy layer; big dry foral nose, some malt in the background; solid dry bitter flavour, light to medium bodied; lingering dry hoppy, almost piney finish, balanced by some juicy malt. Fine session brew.......
