Schroppfy (1730), Ohio, USA Mar 27, 2008 Nice to have an 8% imperial for a change, that’s for sure. This is all roast and chocolate in the flavor, with a little bit of wet paper, and some hop spice (woodiness, slight pine sap). Aroma mostly of roasted grain. Nice conditioning - head stays throughout and keeps the beer lively - but perhaps too lively... This is certainly a beer you don’t want to start out with too cold, as it’ll go down too quickly. The flavor really develops at 55 deg.
heemer77 (3667), Savannah, Missouri, USA Sep 3, 2008 Nearly black body with a pretty garnet edge. The large head is dark tan with lots of large bubbles. The aroma is at first quality roast coffee with some sweet pancakes. There was also a note of almonds. The taste is brash with strong coffee and dark chocolate. The finish has prunes and some bread crust. The body is nicely balance, but has a little bit of rubbing alcohol in the aftertaste along with a strong bitterness. Well made, but I would like a touch less roast. scraff (1662), Baltimore, Maryland, USA Sep 2, 2008 Tasting - Perfect Pour. Dark brownish black, tan creamy head. Soft roasted vanilla coffee nose rides undercurrents of lightly smoked cocoa. Dried dark currants and coffee tones round with hints of vanilla and dark chocolate. Light to medium bodied, soft carbonation, bittersweet finish. Decent, but not in the world class league... henrikb (1094), Aarhus, Denmark Aug 31, 2008 Black body, off white head; Very round slightly sourish grain nose; Very soft sourish deep body; Long finish with alcohol burn, malty grain bitter. mgumby10 (1642), West Palm Beach, Florida, USA Aug 31, 2008 Pours a dark brown color, with a decent tan head. Smells of sharp caramel and chocolate, with hints of alcohol, and toffee notes. The flavor was much the same. Very sharp in its characters. The alcohol wasnt big, but tingled in a stinging way a bit. The chocolate and roasty flavors seem to stand out most. Not overly complex, but certainly solid. Scauca (245), Lovere, Italy Aug 30, 2008 Dark brown with a nice tan lacing head. Chocolate, caramel, little coffee. Very rounded and smooth. Flavour is of bitter cocoa, malty with a dry end. A long aftertaste.
