Dark brown colour with pale brown head. Good hoppy in great balance with the maltiness, that stands back just a bit. Good bitterness that lasts long. Not very dark in flavour profile.

Cask@Derby Winter Beer Festival, 2008. Dark beer with a reddish tinge and a strong head. The aroma is strongly roasted and the flavour is very strongly syrupy and roasted. Overall an average roasted and syrupy beer.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 ChainGangGuy (3682) - Canton, Georgia, USA - JUL 20, 2009
Appearance: Rolls out a dark brown, near black body with a smallish, bubbly, beige head.
Smell: Roasted malts with hints of unsweetened chocolate, licorice candies, coffee, and an all-around earthiness. Rich, vinous fruitiness present. Minor blip of higher alcohols. With some slight warming, the coffee notes deepen to give a touch of Kahlua.
Taste: Dark, roasty malts with flavors of baker’s chocolate and espresso with a more restrained fruitiness. An earthy roastiness pairs with the lightly herbaceous hops to provide a moderate amount of bitterness. As with the nose, a bit of added warmth helps to bring out more of the chocolate and coffee tones. A bit chalky and a touch of alcohol warmth on the roasty, bitter finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: Leans towards being relatively mild and easy-going as opposed to other stouts that are bold and brash.

Bottle, thanks rickgordon. Dark opaque brown with a medium beige head. Mildly roasted character with coffee and some notes of green pepper. Medium bodied and creamy smooth. Very well balanced, perhaps a bit to harshly bitter.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 notalush (3617) - Denver, Colorado, USA - SEP 19, 2008
This is not the kind of in your face imperial stout that most american beer nerd palates have come to expect, which is why I’m surprised it’s still rated so high - it’s more like a slightly more aggressive take on the traditional british version of the style - dark brown, with a soapy, lasting lace - aroma of lactose, chocolate, coffee, intense roast, a tiny bit of alcohol - very smooth mouthfeel - the flavor is extremely roasty, with a lot of coffee character - some sweet chocolate malts ride through the middle, with a bit of plum and dark berry fruitiness as well - but a strong bitterness comes from behind that, making the other characteristics aside from the roastiness disappear from the palate pretty fast - the bitterness lasts quite some time through the finish, and the alcohol becomes fairly evident, adding a warming character - the dryness and bitterness work well in this one, and I kind of find it refreshing to have an impy that isn’t so over the top.

UPDATED: DEC 20, 2010 Cask at RnH. Near black with a beige head. Roasted malty aroma, with tar and molasses. The flavor has a pretty distinct smoky note, almost like burlap, as well as coffee and roasted malt. Not very subtle, but quite tasty.
Bottle. Batch 094, drank about a year after the best by date. Pours near black with a thin beige head. The aroma has molasses, roasted malts, and a bit of a dark fruity notes. The flavor is a bit muted from how I remember the cask version. Light roasted malts, dark fruit, and a smokey hint. Still good, but probably a bit past its prime.
