It was only a matter of time before the original BrewDog got his paws in on the action. This egotistical young lab has decided to make a beer which best reflects himself. This is the beer equivalent of the big, cute chocolate monster. Soft, smooth, dark, chocolately and very strong. This gentle giant will never bite but would much rather give you a big lick on the face.

Batch 004 Best Before 09/09/09 Pitch black pour with a very thin light tan head that rims the glass but otherwise disappears. Potent roasty character with slight hoppiness and some bitter chocolate. Nice roasted malts in the taste and a nice but not overly bitter hop finish. A little one-dimensional even for a fairly classically styled RIS. Nice burnt smoke aftertaste lingers.

Pours a dark brown with small tan head. Flavors of roasted malt, chocolate, smoked bacon, coffee, small notes of dark fruit, and a bitter hoppy finish. Pretty decent, and slightly different imp stout.

(Bottle at Hilpeä Hauki on 2008-02-15) Black. Big brownish head. Smoke and roasted malts in nose. Very full bodied. Perhaps even too heavy for my taste. Still, a good imperial stout.

bottle bb 12/12/09 picked up at sunflower and consumed 7/31/10. clear. dark burgundy reddish porter color with no head. actually, 18 big bubbles disappear in under 30 seconds. aromas of wood, toasted bread, raisins, roast molasses, toasted nuts and dusty grain. the flavor is purdy much the same... lots of molasses, some chocolate and roast. it finishes with some bitterness and prickly spice. medium bodied, slick and still since it is dead flat. benefit of the doubt until this is re-rated7/3/7/1/12/3.0

beerbill (2850) - Laurel, New York, USA - MAY 16, 2009
22.4 oz. bottle. Pours black with a moderate tan head that lasted through two-thirds of the glass and left an almost solid sheet of foam on the glass. Very pleasant aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, and prunes. The roasted malt is more dominant in the flavor, while the chocolate takes a step back. A bit of prune in the flavor as well along with a few notes of tobacco. Moderate bitterness. Medium-full bodied. Enjoyable.

Pours a weak watery brown showing significant light on the pour and in the glass. Head is thin and tan, reluctant to form with coaxing and quick to dissipate. Nose starts with green apple skins, some mild molasses, sweet for sure, no roast, and mild chocolate. Flavor is papery, watery, has a mild grain astringency, bitter chocolate. Watery mouthfeel with some grain husk bite. Not good.

Bottle at the Fourth Butters’ Cellar Clearance Event. Pours a brown with thin ring of tan head. Nose of roasty raisin and light chocolate. Flavors of chocolate, coffee, and dark fruit, and bourbon. Sweet oakey woody finish with some alcohol. Enjoyable.

The base for all of the barrel aged imperial stouts. Pours very dark brown, close to black, with a smooth tan head. Big dark chocolate character, very smooth palate, dry finish. Overall a really nice imperial stout and the perfect base for their barrel experiments. This is one of the few non-barrel beers I thought were worth their price, very well built and solid imperial stout.
