Taste courtesy Hopscotch. Blackish red pour with little head. Roasty grain aroma with sweet malt and just a hint of whiskey. Roasted grains, chocolate malt and hint of hops in the taste. Big and ballsy very assertive malt and very much like an after dinner drink.

UPDATED: JAN 7, 2009 Pitch black. Again, kind of weird. Aroma of caramel and chocolate milk. Flavor is almost of brownies. Alcohol very apparent in the finish. Nice flavor, but not sure I’ll be able to finish the bottle. Mouthfeel is nice for a great ale. PS, I made it through the bottle.
Re-Rate: Alcohol mellows with a bit of age. Develops a bit of pleasant sourness.

UPDATED: AUG 2, 2010 Butter’s 4th cellar reduction. Pours dark brown with a thin tan head. Cherry, caramel and biscuit aromas. Taste is slight licorice, coffee and chocolate with alcohol coming through the nose. Nice bitter finish. score 3.5..........8/2/2010-Riptide Black mahogany edges thin tan head. Bottle says 004 best by 9-9-09, One pint, 6.4 fl oz. I guess it’s even a mellower mellow imp stout now. Aroma of caramel, molasses, hazelnut, ash,, dark fruit, dark chocolate, cream, a touch of butter. Taste is very nice, lots of chocolatey malt with some burnt and toasted malt on the finish along with coffee beans. I can see why this isn’t one of the higher rated Imp Stouts but damn it’s still really good at this age. Very soft on the palate, still tons of flavor, creamy, smooth, silky, lightly carbonated. Alcohol is not noticeable. At 6.99 I got a deal considering the store I bought it from aged it for me for a while, it was not refrigerated but on the bottom shelf, behind other things out of the light and caked in dust.

Super dark, lively mocha head. Some seawater on the nose. I’m getting aromas of peat as well. Nice hoppy bite, stands up strong to the dark foundation.

Courtesy of Magic_Dave. Thanks, Tom. The aroma is sweet fresh dark fruits including cherry, prune and plum with a bit of peat and natural high cocoa content chocolate as well. Very nice aroma. The bottle is full on black and holds a thumb thick, diminishing mocha head that leaves clingy, clumpy lace. Soy, dark chocolate, cherry, milk chocolate, burnt/heavily roasted bitterness, coffee bitterness and a bit of treacle. The salty soy flavor lingers into the finish, but this can also be quite sweet and bitter at varying ranges. A very nicely done beer that at 8% is not lacking at all for complexity.
