It was only a matter of time before the original BrewDog got his paws in on the action. This egotistical young lab has decided to make a beer which best reflects himself. This is the beer equivalent of the big, cute chocolate monster. Soft, smooth, dark, chocolately and very strong. This gentle giant will never bite but would much rather give you a big lick on the face.

Pours near black with reddish hues and a fully receding mocha head. Notes of toasted malt, salted chocolate, smoked meats, and vinous fruits. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation. Vinous and salty, quite nice.

It is interesting to me that the front of the bottle calls this a twisted, merciless stout but then the back of it compares it to a gentle black lab. Which is it BrewDog? I am thinking the back of the bottle is closer to the truth. It’s hardly a monster by today’s standards and certainly not a monster by BrewDog’s standards. It pours a nice, pretty garnet black w/ a small head of tight white bubbles and just a bit of lace. It’s not perfect but it looks good. Nose is fruity ale yeast and roasted grains. Thick and mildy carbonated, the mouthfeel works well enough for the style but I feel like it needs a bit more life to be truly excellent. The flavor is rich w/ plums and fruit along w/ a bit of milk chocolate. It makes for a nice sipper but this doesn’t really have the depth of flavor that makes for a great big stout.

UPDATED: JAN 23, 2010 33 cl bottle. Black color, moderate beige/tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee, hops and hints of liqorice. Flavor is smooth roasted malt, coffee, chocolate. Dry finish. A nice rock´n´roll beer.

Deep brown body with a fine creamy beige head what never disappears fully. Fine aroma opens with roasted grains and coffee, after a while comes some fine spicies like vanilla, dark chocolate and a moderated hop. Rich body and oily texture, fine roasted grains and dark chocolate in the flavor. Mild fruitiness and bitterness with a light caramel and dark chocolate. Long roasted aftertaste. Nice stout!!!

Dark chocolate brown color pour with a small, but lasting tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate and coffee. Flavor is chocolate and coffee as well, with some roasted sweet malt and dark fruit. Smooth on the palate, but a bit thin. A touch of hops on the finish. Highly drinkable. A pretty good brew.

Dark mahogany pour with an eggshell head. Aroma of cocoa, smoke, and light roasted coffee. Flavor similar with mild chocolate and subtle coffee bean finding their way to the palate. A little thin for the style.

Wow...after tasting the three brews I have from these guys, might pass on all other offerings. None of these are enjoyable...NONE!!! This beer is a dark mahogany pour with only a few bubbles accumulating to create a head. Burnt malt, overly sweet, and cloying. Strange sourness in the finish. Don’t waste your money!!!

660ml bottle (BBD 12/12/09) from The Grapevine in Pocatello
Appearance: Pours thick black with a very small tan head that recedes quickly and very little lacing on the sides of the glass as I swirl it. Aroma: Rich cocoa and dark fruits
Taste: Fairly smooth, but surprisingly has a slightly thin mouthfeel. Dark chocolate and malts, coffee and some hop bitterness in the finish
Nice and chocolatey.
