Bottle thanks to Bu11zeye. Pours dark and has the exact appearance of diet coke. Nose is cocoa powder, booze, and roasted malt. Taste is like a mouthful of coffee grounds with a bit of chocolate. Very bitter. Decent mouthfeel.
2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 Crosling (1861) - Loveland, Colorado, USA - JAN 31, 2009
Dark brown with ruby edges. Frothy, bubbly head of light tan cream. Malt accented nose lacks depth and describable character, with some medicinal character and some dark malt (cocoa and smoke.) Flavor is very stale and dull. Very poor balance, oxidized and tough to drink. I really wish Brewdog would consider a much beefier beer for their Paradox.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 mgumby10 (1856) - Jupiter, Florida, USA - AUG 31, 2008
Pours a dark brown color, with a decent tan head. Smells of sharp caramel and chocolate, with hints of alcohol, and toffee notes. The flavor was much the same. Very sharp in its characters. The alcohol wasnt big, but tingled in a stinging way a bit. The chocolate and roasty flavors seem to stand out most. Not overly complex, but certainly solid.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Vaiz (1847) - Den Haag, NETHERLANDS - APR 18, 2010
Bottle, thanks for sharing dEnk! Deep dark brown pour, thin tan head with lots of lacing. Aroma of fresh bread, caramel, butter, peat and leather. Flavor is slightly sweet, bread, some licorice and sugar and with a bitter finish. Nice.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Brigadier (1837) - Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA - MAY 6, 2009
22.4 oz bottle
At $11.99 I thought this was fairly pricey until a recent run had me picking up more bombers in the same price range. Nonetheless I won’t be buying it again despite being a solid imperial stout. I understand the need to charge more for something that has to cross an ocean. However after my final bottle of Paradox I think I am done with Brewdog for a while.
Aroma / Appearance - Ashy brown in complexion the head contrasts nicely with the dense inky black body. Peat, smoke, anise, vanilla, caramel, and warm smores blend into an invitation to explore this more.
Flavor / Palate - Creamy molasses starts the show followed by smoke and peanut butter. Dried oak chips trace their way over the back of the tongue along with chocolate flakes. The finish gives a pleasant touch yet could be more assertive. Overall this falls into the "nice but expensive" category along with beers like DFH Black and Blue and Southern Tier’s Cuvee series.
2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 Elwood (1834) - Between a rock and a hard place, Virginia, USA - JUL 7, 2009
12 oz. bottle. Pours almost black with ruby highlights and a very small, very light tan head. The head dissipates very quickly. This one has a roasted nose with light fruit undertones and a bit of coffee. Medium carbonation with a medium mouthfeel. Dry and bitter for sure. Overwhelmingly bitter. Roasted malt, a little caramel, mineral notes, and come coffee on the palate, but all of that is quickly washed away by an acridic bitterness that is like chewing on aspirin. A long, bitter finish. The overwhelming bitterness just ruins the enjoyment and surely makes this a beer I have no desire to return to.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 SuIIy (1828) - Natick, Massachusetts, USA - JAN 28, 2010
Bottle. Pours a deep reddish brown color with a small tan head that recedes to nothing. Nose is heavy on teh chocolate malt and light caramely syrup notes. Palate is flat with a good thickness and a nice sticky after note. Flavors of chocolate malt, some cola flavors, and a light vanilla note in the finish. Kind of like a chocolate, flat, vanilla coke.
