This poured a black color with a beige head. The aroma contains some coffee, chocolate, and licorice. The flavor is rather bitter with some licorice, coffee, and chocolate. An odd gritty aftertaste. Overall a decent stout but not a great Impy.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Kestral (494) - Årnes, NORWAY - JAN 13, 2010
Bottle. Pours black with reddish brown highlights, just a few bubbles for a head, fairly still. Swirling the glass brought no head either, just some spotted lace and dark brown streaks on the glass walls. Looks like one of those super high abv imp stouts. Not sure how I’ve been drinking the same brew as the other raters here. None on the first page mention hops in the aroma, whilst mine was just full of it. Loads of citrus, some resin, liquorice, dark yet sweet chocolate, sweet fruits, some vanilla. Plenty of hops on the tongue too. A fresh citrus hop wave hits first, before a sweeter malt medsection, with a big, bitter, burnt espresso and cocoa powder finish. It looks more or less flat, but there is a significant tingling in the tongue. Could perhaps have done with a bit more, to get a thicker body, as it’s left a wee bit thinner than I’d like. It’s a surprising brew, didn’t expect this much hops, and I certainly didn’t expect that massive espresso finish, when the aroma didn’t reveal anything coffee like at all. Said finish is actually a bit harsh, making it more of a sipper.
