3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle (330ml) shared with HogTownHarry & garthicus -- c/o garthicus. Pours a murky orange-red with a small diminishing frothy tan head. Aroma: Whoa, I was not expecting that! Lots of peat smoke along with wood, toasted caramel malt, some alcohol, candy and lots of earthiness. Big flavour with tons of peat and wood along with toasted caramel malt and a bitter, dry, woody finish. For such a high abv the alcohol is pretty well hidden. Medium bodied. Not something I’d want often but it is an interesting sipper, and I do like that it’s not a vanilla and whiskey bomb.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Murky muddy brown looking body with lasting head. Several layers in the aroma, peat, wood, smoke, sugar, caramel and dark fruit. Taste was a little overpowering at first, wood and peat, then the other flavours show up, good beer big beer but wouldn’t be everyone’s favourite.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
330ml bottle shared by garthicus with me and blankboy. Hazy deep ruby with a smallish frothy beige head. Love that aroma - Islay for sure, candi, alcohol ... herbal .... mmmmmm! Taste - incredibly earthy, iodine, the sweetness from the aroma ran away - almost like a snuffed match - love it, and the alcohol is quite restrained .... the hoppiness is sneaky - any less Laphroig hessian/seaweed and this would seem VERY hoppy, but as it is ... backseat, bitch! A bit watery, very astringent, weakly carbonated, with a very long Islay dry finish. I love a good whisky, so I love this.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle. Appearance: Thick red, small brown head. Aroma: whiskey, wood, lots of sweetness, raisins, candy, lots of malt, smells great. Flavour: Smoke! Malt! Like a bbq plank, lots of raisin and candy, quite sweet but with an overwhelming whiskey and wood flavour. Quite the surprise!

3.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Nice red amber colour , kept a good head, smell of what i first thought was fishy and started to like it. First sip was fairly heavy taste of oak, but after a few sips got a nice fruity/oak taste which would be lovely with certain foods. Lovely full bodied beer and one that ill be going back to very soon.

2.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
Bottle… Dark, clear, burnt-orange ale with a small, frothy, off-white head. Good retention. The bouquet offers and odd (but not entirely dysfunctional) marriage of peaty Scotch whiskey, Nelson hops, and caramel malts. Medium to full-bodied with an abrasive mouthfeel and laid-back carbonation. The cardboard-like flavor is boozy, minerally, oxidized and over-attenuated – neither feels nor tastes at all like a barleywine. Finishes alcoholic, bone-dry and far too bitter. There’s just no residual sugar at all here... and it’s a barleywine? A complete miss by two of my favorite avant-garde breweries. Bottle courtesy of darkguardian!
