3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 freeofthoughts (522) - Raytown, Missouri, USA - JAN 5, 2013
Brewed August of 2010, aged 8 months. Pours ruby brown with very little head. Light aroma of sweet grains and peat with wood. The flavor is rich peat with lightly smoked malt, a bit of dried fruit. Lighter body with a diminished carbonation. Not bad, highlights the wood well but underwhelming base beer. Light drying finish with simple hop and wood lingering.
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Tinco (415) - Linköping, SWEDEN - JAN 1, 2013
Deep brown, amber shine when held up to the light. Brown head. Aroma: sweet toffee, smoked ham, slightly peaty, maybe some raisins, whiskey, pretty subdued to be honest. Taste is classic Islay peat, smoked ham, well concealed alcohol, toffee and sugars. Peat is dominant. If you like Islay whiskey u will like this one. More cool than good though...

Bottle. Beer is dark brown with tan head. Smells after smoke, dried fruit and that little whiskey volatility. Taste is going after aroma with nice sweetness. Medium body with soft carbonation, creamy texture and long, warmth finish. Overally nicely balanced barley wine with that really exciting fruit note in it.

Bottle shared by durwoodx. Thanks Darrell.
Served with Bourbon Barrel Aged Santa’s Little Helper.
The beer is dark brown with a quarter inch of lasting beige head. The aroma offers chocolate, roast, alcohol, malt. Good flavor with some hop bitterness in the finish. Well balanced, with some bitter chocolates and roast. Warming finish. Medium bodied with appropriate carbonation level. Overall, a solid beer.

This is my kind of beer though it clearly isn’t for everyone. Pours brown with a thin tannish head. Aroma is smoke for days, charcoal, dark fruit, peat whiskey. Taste is smokey, strong, alcohol, charcoal ash, dark fruits, plums, raisins. This is what Sunturnbrew would be like if it caught fire. I liked it a lot.
