Bottle. Brown (dark amber) colour with a beige head, medium formation and good duration. Aroma is malty, alcoholic, brown sugar with notes of smoke and peat. Flavor is slightly sweet, notes of wood, caramel, malts, toffee and brown sugar. The final is light bittery, good compensated with sweet traces. Rounded final with notes of wood and bourbon.

Backlog review, bottle tasted sometime early 2011. Pours chestnut brown, clear with ruby highlights, thin head with thin lacing. Aroma is smokey, peaty, with iodine primarily, giving way to light fruits, brown malts, hint of hops. Taste is peat, Islay character bites a bit too strongly, ending with salt, bitter hops, smoke. Salty smoke character out of hand. Body feels thin. The whisky malts dominate hear almost to the exclusion of everything else, a bit unpleasant- interesting concept but not the best execution.

Dark brown to copper body, offwhite head. Aroma has Sweet malt, raisins, plum, BBQ-sauce some radish like vegetable notes. Strangely not bad. Flavour is very sweet and grainy with ashy malt and peated cola. Dark caramel and alcohol.

330 ml bottle. #096. BB 19/03/16. From brewdog.com. Parallel tasting with the Islay version.
The colour with dark brown with a tiny greyish white head. Roasted malt, alcohol, whiskey, mild peat, BBQ sauce, some dryness and brown sugary sweetness in the aroma. The flavour is very much whiskey, peat, dryness, roasted malt, bitterness and some sugary sweetness. The flavour is very strong. This is more balanced than the Islay version.

A lovely barley wine. Great beer, pours dark gold/brown. Smells like whiskey, tastes of peat smoke, barley, and caramel...

980 yen from Asahiya, it pours a reddish brown with a slight head that vanished quickly. 11.5% The aroma is strong! Boozy, sweet, woodsy with some whiskey notes. Yup, aged 8 months in whiskey barrels. The flavor is pungent, very peaty with a hint of smoke. A kind of dry smokiness, surprising but kind of nice. Really different, promising. I think this would be a great beer to cellar or go well with smoked foods. It’s good at the moment but not what you’d expect from a beer, I would be interested to see how it would develop over time.

Obviously a polarizing beer and I fall on the "love it" side. Sweet caramel and chocolate with a meaty, peat smoke essence -- comes off almost like a mole sauce which, again, tends to be a love it or hate it dish.

Typical peated laphroig whisky taste and aroma leaving no room for other taste and aroma. A bit too much for a beer. Wooden dry aftertaste.

Location/Date:Bottle split with Dave on 6/18/2013.

Appearance: Pours a dark maroon opaque.
Aroma: Aroma of caramel, light smoke.
Taste: Light bitter, caramel, but a ton of what seems to be liquid smoke(like for cooking) on the end that ruins it for me.
Palate:Medium body.

Summary: The finish on this beer, which seems like liquid smoke you’d use in cooking indoors to add smoke flavor(but only a little) overpowers this beer and makes it hard to drink. Like I wrote on untapped, "Bitch No Thanks".
