Bottle: Poured a deep clear amber color ale with a nice large foamy head with good retention and good lacing. Aroma of wood and sickening sweetness doesn’t make for an interesting aroma. Taste is like crunching into an old scotch barrel that has bathed in sugar, i.e. not an interesting proposition. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. I finally drain poured half the bottle after I couldn’t take any more of the bad scotch ester and the sickening sweetness.

Clear reddish hue. Strong smoked bacon peated malt aroma. Mild whiskey and malt u p front before the big chewy bacon finish. Hops and aftertaste are mild. More a speciality brew than a barley wine. Nice as a novelty ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottled at Vihreä Haltiatar, Jyväskylä. Reddish brown color. Sweet aromas of tar, iodine, toffee. Sweet tarry, smoky and toffeish flavor with with charred wood. Bittersweet, peaty and tarry finish. Not bad, but this is more like a whisky-beer coctail with whisky on top and beer in the background.

Copenhagen Beerfestival 2011. Pours a clear brown with a small head and some lacings. Very sweet and quite bitter. Aromas of peat and leather with hints of cask wood, grapes, smoke and tobacco. Medium to full bodied. Medium carbonation. Dry finish.

Hermod (1687) - Vantaa, FINLAND - FEB 20, 2012
Bottled. Poured dark amber with a thin white head. Heavy islay whiskey aroma, flavor very similar, some sweet maltiness lingering. Long finish, slight alcohol notes. Quite an enjoyable, different barley wine.

12 oz. bottle. I regretted this purchase when I looked at the receipt and noticed it was $14 for a 12 oz. bottle. Brew Dog’s involvement should have been a red flag. Pours a muddy reddish-mahogany, off-white head. Aroma is mild, smokey, some caramel and toffee, which absolutely does not prepare me for the absolute shock as this liquid hit my tongue. Smoke, cleaning fluid, and cigarette ash. Absolutely jarring. I then wondered whether something awful had happened to me and my palate went bad. Luckily, I was reassured when I passed it around and received similar responses. Just unfathomable. Never again, Brew Dog, never again.

mcberko (2465) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - FEB 18, 2012
12 oz. bottle, brought back from the UK by the amazing Matts_Property, pours a dark amber with a small beige head. Aroma of scotch islay barrels, smoked malts, and some caramel malts. Flavour of smoke, islay whiskey barrels, a bit of caramel sweetness and a full body - none of the short bread, fudge or candy floss elements as indicated in the description. The smoke / islay whiskey dominates everything here, and the booze is quite prominent as well. Decent.

Smokey whiskey on the nose. But a lot of green, hops also. Thick malty. Woodbarrely. The finish feels more like a whiskey than ale. Im confused.
