COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
When we brewed the first ever batch of Tokyo, we decided to fill three whisky casks, two Highland and one Lowland. Tokyo Rising Sun is the result. We cannot decide if it is a good or bad thing that we managed to forget about these barrels for 4 years. It is definitely a good thing we found them. Brewed in May 2008. And then forgotten about. A beautiful accident. An unsuspecting masterpiece. A beery time capsule. This imperial stout has been aged in a Scotch whisky cask for over 4 years. For more than 48 long months this beer lay hidden in oak in the depths of our north east of Scotland warehouse. Highland Edition Tasting Notes: aged in a Highland whisky cask resulting in a viscous slow motion roller coaster of powdered cacao, hints of burning pirate ships, salted caramel, sharp berries and toasted marshmallow. Best enjoyed with a dose of vagrant optimism.

Bottle 46. Forgotten or intended? Doesn’t matter, the result is close to perfect. My second favourite stout after speedway so far. Doesn’t poor as thick and oily as other imperial stouts but has all the depth and complexity of one, new aromas pealing out once you let it warm up to room temperature. Quite highly carbonated but not much head even so. There is the cherry sweetness of the regular Tokyo combined with the strong earthyness, turf and sulfur of the whiskey barrel. Chocolate in the background.

33 cl bottle from Brewdog.com. Bottle nr 603. Pours black with a very small fizzy brown head that leaves quickly. Extreme highland whisky aroma with notes of roasted malts. Alcohol, rosted malts, wood and smoke to the tounge. Sweet and dry finish. Full body, low to none carbonation, low bitterness.

Big, black, sticky sweet. Smells of chocolate, whisky, and vanilla. Not much booze on the palate. If you can afford it, go for it..

UPDATED: APR 7, 2013 330 ml bottle. Bottle 1673 of 2237. #169. Bottled 26/05/2012. From brewdog.com.
Black colour with a tiny tan head. The aroma is very strong with alcohol, malt, hops, mild tartness, ash, grass, liquorice and wood. The flavour is portwine, dryness, roasted malt, alcohol, wood, bitterness, mild hops and lots of sugary sweetness. Slightly disappointing.

330ml botte - shared by rosenberg - thanks
Rich soy aroma. Black, small tan ring head. Strange plant-mattery lettuce leaf taste, and a fuck-ton of sugar. sugar sugar sugar. more sugar. did I mention sugar syrup. Yes a slightly ashy bacony roast in the finnish, but I can’t get over the fucking sugar. Oppressively sticky sweet palate. carbonation could not fix this no matter what level it was it. It was moderate. Finish a bit ashy and sugary. Drinkable, I guess.

(Bottle, 0.33 l - bottle #1673 - bath 159 - bbe 26-05-12, courtesy of rosenbergh, thanks Jan, 20130406) The beer poured black and oily. Its head was small and white. Aroma had smoke, wood, whisky and roasted malts. Palate was full bodied and dry with medium carbonation. Flavours were smoke, sugar. wood, whisky, roasted malts, liquorice and bitterness. Afteraste was smoky, sweet and mildly bitter. Very very sweet brew and even the whisky casks weren’t able to hide that.

Bottled. Pours deep brown and nearly black with a medium sized tan, short lasting head and fair lacing. Nose of dark malts, prunes, wood, whiskey, chocolate and alcohol notes. Sweet flavor with roasted malt, brown sugar, vanilla, roasted malt, that ends up more dry with an alcohol touch. Medium to full bodied, creamy to oily texture and soft CO2. Enjoyable and quite interesting. ★★★★
