COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
When we brewed the first ever batch of Tokyo, we decided to fill three whisky casks, two Highland and one Lowland. Tokyo Rising Sun is the result. We cannot decide if it is a good or bad thing that we managed to forget about these barrels for 4 years. It is definitely a good thing we found them. Brewed in May 2008. And then forgotten about. A beautiful accident. An unsuspecting masterpiece. A beery time capsule. This imperial stout has been aged in a Scotch whisky cask for over 4 years. For more than 48 long months this beer lay hidden in oak in the depths of our north east of Scotland warehouse. Highland Edition Tasting Notes: aged in a Highland whisky cask resulting in a viscous slow motion roller coaster of powdered cacao, hints of burning pirate ships, salted caramel, sharp berries and toasted marshmallow. Best enjoyed with a dose of vagrant optimism.

Purchased from Brewdog Online Store, drunk alongside a Tokyo*. Comparatively thinner with less of a full-on ’punch’ of flavour in the beginning, but offering a much more exciting lingering flavour. Peaty smoke and a real smoothness on display. Quite an exciting beer, but at £25 a pop not an experience I’ll be having often.

Bottle: #1973/2237: Thanks Palme: Served in a Chouffe glass: Pitch black beer thin brown lacing. Aromas of peat, iodine, bandage, leather, tar, something light fruity and/or flowers, roast, soy and light smoke. Flavours of brown sugars, earth, leather, bitters and sweets, light smoke, some soy, some tar, thick prunes and raisin, some deep sticky roast and sweet whiskey. Aftertaste is a mix of sweets, soy, brown sugars, some earthy and leather tones and some prunes. Low carbo, oily silky mouthfeel, full bodied and a oily sticky texture.

From a shared 33cl bottle. Dark brown with a small beige head. Modest oaky and quity whisky like. Pleasant one, but on the sweet side. Nice one!

UPDATED: JAN 7, 2014 Has a strong barbecued meat taste. Meat that has been barbecued on salty drift wood. And peat.

Bottle: Poured pitch-black color stout with a large dark brown foamy head with OK retention and some lacing. Aroma of black chocolate with dominant notes of scotch is quite sublime. Taste is a great mix between some powder cacao and some residuals sugar notes with some dominant notes of scotch which rounded some of the rough edge. Body is quite full with somewhat of an oily texture and medium carbonation with no warming alcohol notes. This is an extreme beer for sure but some balanced was retained and barrel-aging treatment is excellent.

33cl Bottle. Pours black with light brown head. Aroma alcohol, whiskey, choco, wood, caramel. Taste caramel choco sweet, little alcohol burn, cherry, little coffee bitter. Mouthfeel oily. Great beer, loads of whiskey flavour, sweet and powerfull.

Bottle @ SlackerMads. Pours black with a tan creamy small head. Aroma is quite heavily peated, very very sweet, sugary, toasted, burnt, fruit, roasted malt, licorice is heavy sweet, moderate bitter and salt. Body is full, texture is sticky/viscous, carbonation is soft. Finish is very long sweet and peated. This is is rather crazy concoction and simply way too sweet.

Bottle, bottled on 2012-05-26. Pitch black with a medium sized quickly diminishing lightly lacing head. Nose is very peaty with some sweet chocolate in the background. Taste is sticky sweet with some bitterness not really punching through. Peat, burnt sugar, the peat is present all the way through. In the middle of the taste the peat is somewhat in the background with sweeter candy/brown sugar notes coming forward, yet the peat is there in the there waiting and rolling in in the finish. Sugary sweet finish with lingering peat. Too much peat and sugary sweetness for my taste.
