3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 TAR (2236) - Lafayette, USA - JUL 28, 2009
Batch 001: Deep ebony with chestnut hues. Minute but tight and persistent beige ring of foam. Cohesive and fairly lustrous nougat, vanilla, roasted barley, anise, dried plum, and chocolate-doused oak aromatics are bludgeoned by fusel (acetone) alcohols. Hint of peanut comes and goes. Scant carbonation. Charred sugars clutch the tongue as they couple with the tannic tingle and perfumey alcohol. Malt showcases nice depth reminiscent of toasted nuts, smoky roast and lightly burnt cookies, but the complexity is short-lived as it is unable to take foothold and overcome the sharp and peppery fusel notes which deaden the palate. Borderline medicinal at times. Oak exhibits good restraint as it never interferes with the numerous subtleties by depositing inordinate amounts of vanilla. Oxidation is perceived in the form of sherry, but is quite minimal. Agreeable interplay between the charcoal-tinged malt and pungent but clean oakiness. Finishes with mild notes of road tar and crunchy char, though continually sharp and fusel which obscures the lurking dark fruit and licorice succulence. Lots of potential here (artful balance, understated oak, deep and nicely textured malt, etc.) as the beer is well-constructed. Could be very enjoyable if one is able to overlook the fusels.

Well-balanced nose, all the ingredients harmonize with each other. The flavour is smooth roasted with notes of coffee, dark chocolate, oak, flowers and berries. Hints of liquorice and maybe a touch of jasmine. The mouthfeel is numbing and round. Medium to full bodied.

330 ml bottle shared by bsuedekum- thanks again, Blake! Batch 001, best by 31/11/09 (since when are there 31 days in November?). Aroma of peat, smoked malts, oak, soy, chocolate, roasted malts, and brown sugar. Flavor of spices, toasted oak, peat, earth, chocolate, and some berry fruits. Light-bodied, thinned out over the years, with low carbonation and a smoky, roasty, watery mouthfeel. Jasmine and cranberry were hard to pick out in this one. Good, but probably better fresher.

Bottle/12oz - Pours a very dark black/brown in color with no head and almost no carbonation. Aroma... dark roasted malts, oak/vanilla, chocolate, sweet herbs, sweet malts and plenty of red fruit... awesome. Palate is quite thick and smooth on the tongue. Flavor is medium sweet with lots of fruit... cherries and cranberries (!) mostly... lovely. Lingering dark roasted malts, cranberry tart/bitter and a decent amount of chocolate. Alcohol, in spite of its incredible strength, is well muted and offset by the other strong flavors of the beer. This is a masterful and awesome beer... one of the most enjoyable, if not strongest, I have had for a very long time!! Truly an amazing/excellent beer...
3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 diabel (1537) - Aarschot, BELGIUM - NOV 29, 2011
Deep black body with a dark brown head (to the extent that one can speak of a head, there is almost no head). Aroma mainly of coffee, but pop up as well: prunes, dark fruit, cognac, brandy: very complex aroma but not very attractive. Moderately bitter, heavily sweet flavour with actually a rather weak mouthfeel. Not as dense as one would have expected. Ok, not great.
