Zeitgeist is an ideosyncratic alternative black lager It seeks to recreate the spirit, attitude and autonomy of an age gone by. Its inspiration is found more than 200 years ago. Zeitgeist takes an age old classic, a forgotten masterpiece and gives it relevance and an avant-garde edge. Zeitgeist encapsulates our view of contemporary society, yet simultaneously endeavours to improve it. There is too much conformity. Not enough thought, not enough individualism, not enough alternatives. Our military line ups represent conformity to a higher authority, be it political, brand, celebrity, religion or trend. The subjects in our dystopian landscape further seek to repress their identity through uniforms and masks. Yet underneath their body shapes reveal cracks of personality and individualism. Zeitgeist is about identity, non-conformity and idiosyncrasy. It is a collective, an idea, a movement. It is about giving up ownership of itself to those who care enough to listen.

On tap at BrewDog Sao Paulo. Pours black almost opaque with a minimal frothy head. It has a slightly malty aroma with hints of fruit. Although you can taste the malt it is not sweet and surprisingly bitter with a quite hoppy finish. There is better Schwarzbier out there.

Bottle from Pothole (Koht’s newly opened bottle shop) in Tallinn (€ 3,50), July 2014. Pours a very deep dark brown with a red hue (black as night in the glass); head is big and fluffy, tan, retaining, leaving good lacing. Nose is roasted malts and some caramel (the classic Buratino lemonade, but that disappears fast); also something burnt and liquorice-like. Taste is very clear roased malts, or cool coffee for that matter, slightly chocolaty, with some bitter and sour tingling in the finish. Body is very light, palate soft and velvety, carbonation low. Overall a good one, though I reckon I’d have enjoyed it more in a cool winter evening than in a boiling summer night.

Bottle 330 ml. What a great beer this is, nice pitch black colour, medium beige foam which stays a bit, good aroma combined with the Swartz taste is really good, not to mention the after taste of anis and the soft consistency f the beer it self. :-)

Bottle 330 ml at home, from a trade with Countbeer, thanks! Poured into a tall tulip, ABV 4.7% Dark brown in colour wih a small and thin light beige head. Average retention, light lacing on the glass. Aroma of coffee, light chocolate, liquorice. Taste is slighty better but nothing to be too excited for, again coffee, lighter liquorice, some hops giving a nice bitterness quite fast and carrying on the aftertaste, along with dark chocolate. Thin body, okay carbonation. Mixed feelings about this beer, is nothing spectacular but it leaves a good impression at the end. I’d say it’s a decent example.
