Zeitgeist is an ideosyncratic alternative black lager It seeks to recreate the spirit, attitude and autonomy of an age gone by. Its inspiration is found more than 200 years ago. Zeitgeist takes an age old classic, a forgotten masterpiece and gives it relevance and an avant-garde edge. Zeitgeist encapsulates our view of contemporary society, yet simultaneously endeavours to improve it. There is too much conformity. Not enough thought, not enough individualism, not enough alternatives. Our military line ups represent conformity to a higher authority, be it political, brand, celebrity, religion or trend. The subjects in our dystopian landscape further seek to repress their identity through uniforms and masks. Yet underneath their body shapes reveal cracks of personality and individualism. Zeitgeist is about identity, non-conformity and idiosyncrasy. It is a collective, an idea, a movement. It is about giving up ownership of itself to those who care enough to listen.

Into the glass pours a deep black brew, which is hardly sparkling. It smells and tastes almost exactly like a Köstritzer Schwarzbier. Only includes the Zeitgeist nearly no CO2. The flavors are dominated by roasted malt and a coffee-like bitterness. Towards the middle part it gets even more bitter coffee and roasty.

Very nice dark ale. Aroma of toffee or mollasses. Very very dark brown colour, with a great initial head. Tastes much like a scotch ale. Some sweetness, but not overpoweringly so. Maybe hints of raisin, or chocolate, with some hints of banana.

Wood and coffee taste and aroma and a small head. Quite short and bitter taste. It is a quite an ok beer but I personally would have liked a bit fuller taste.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle. The beer pours a dark brownish-red color with a white head. The aroma is heavy on the toasted malt with some toffee and grass notes. The flavor is toffee, coffee and roasted malt. Overall, the beer smells and tastes about like I think a schwarzbier should taste like. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. One of the better BrewDog beers I have tried.

ALLOVATE (2769) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - DEC 23, 2010
Pours opaque, dull and jet black in colour. Head a mere layer of tan bubbles atop. Cherries, boysenberries and mulberries, kirsch liqueur and steaming chocolate fondant pudding comes through on the nose as does a lot of rich, charred timber, smoke and peppery spice, very nice. Robust, full bodied and smooth and velvety in mouthfeel. Ashen, bonfire smoke fills the mouth, caramelised and burnt bitter berries along the sides, a huge peak of malt bitterness and peppery spices in back before a long, rum and raisin-like swallow that has more fruit and smoke. Hints. This is divine, complex yet easily sessionable. It dries out the palate well but lingers oh so long; this is very, very refreshing stuff. Additional points just for the fabulous label. A gem of a schwarzbier! (33cL, BB 31/10/10, 1st Choice liquor Jandakot)
