Zeitgeist is an ideosyncratic alternative black lager It seeks to recreate the spirit, attitude and autonomy of an age gone by. Its inspiration is found more than 200 years ago. Zeitgeist takes an age old classic, a forgotten masterpiece and gives it relevance and an avant-garde edge. Zeitgeist encapsulates our view of contemporary society, yet simultaneously endeavours to improve it. There is too much conformity. Not enough thought, not enough individualism, not enough alternatives. Our military line ups represent conformity to a higher authority, be it political, brand, celebrity, religion or trend. The subjects in our dystopian landscape further seek to repress their identity through uniforms and masks. Yet underneath their body shapes reveal cracks of personality and individualism. Zeitgeist is about identity, non-conformity and idiosyncrasy. It is a collective, an idea, a movement. It is about giving up ownership of itself to those who care enough to listen.

Bottle, I don’t remember what size, where or with whom I shared it. Slightly thin-looking black pour with a wispy off-white head. Heavy licorice/roast aroma - like burnt toast with treacle on it. The taste follows, deep roast, moderately boozy, with candied fruit and dry herbal bitterness - but oddly no licorice as in the aroma. Oddly thin-bodied, slick, decently carbonated, very quick-finishing .... I liked it! If they were going for something light and roasty, they got it.

330 ml bottle, bought at Systembolaget, Sweden. ABV is 4.9%. Black colour, dark brown in the highlights. Moderate beige head. Very nice roasty aroma with notes of chocolate and coffee, hints of liquorice. Fresh mouthfeel with hints of fruity acidity. The flavour is roasty with notes of coffee, fairly dry. A pronounced roasty and hoppy bitterness in the finish.

Bottled 33cl. Ordered from www.bierzwerg.de. I like taste a lot more than the nose. Coffe, roasted malt and apricot showing up. Lovely on the swallow.

Bottle from Gekrackte ketel (sic). Pours dark brown with a slight beige head. Sort of a sweet dark malt aroma - like a child’s breakfast drink. Maybe it’s a touch of chocolate? Near medium body with frothy carbonation. Flavor is sweet dark malt. Not sticky. Just more reminiscent of some sort of cereal drink than a schwarzbier. Finishes decently bitter though. Ok beer. An interesting one. Not one I’d run out to find another of.

No head. Aroma is sour, some burnt grass, leather and earthy. Taste is citric, acitic, spices and bitterness, light body. Carbonation is rather fizzy.

Poured a dark black and with little to no head. Very mocha-cocoa nose. Also some pepper and rye bread. Taste is dusty but with piles and piles of cocoa. Some coca-cola in there as well. Quite nice actually. Extremely soft mouth feel and carbonation is near zero.

On tap. Poured dark brown, basically black with a short off-white head and streaks of lacing. The aroma was smoke, malts and chocolate. The flavor followed suit. Medium in body and a nice compliment to the BBQ I had with it for dinner. Tasty.
