There is nothing black about this IPA. However, it is probably the most authentic American IPA. Big on malt and hops; it reminds me of DFH 90 minute. It’s a good beer, but not what they’re advertising.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draught at the brewpub on July 8, 2013.
Part of a 4 beer sample tray/flight.
Described at the brewpub as a "Black IPA".
Clear dark brown color, not really dark enough though as per their described "style", tan head. Sweet, hoppy, bitter, alcohol taste. Alcohol aftertaste. Warming. Smooth mouthfeel, medum high bitterness, alcohol bite. Sweet, alcohol scent.
For my taste too much focus on alcohol, not that well hidden.

I think this is trying to be a black hoppy beer. Lots of sweetish alcohol and a
barnyardy hop note that reminds me of old skool pilsner. Some similarity
to the White Rabbit. I like it (I think) but somewhat simple and forced.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
very dark brown with beige lacing head . aroma of esters , liquorice , hops . taste is malty hoppy and some barley wine hints . overall not that good - the harsh alcohol presence overpowers the hops unfortunately
