2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 Stew41 (1457) - Woodend, AUSTRALIA - JUN 6, 2011
Sampler at the breakup. Mildly spiced lager for mine. Nothing wrong here, just a bit ’plain Jane’. Nice pepper to finish, witbier like without the fruit.

Light amber with slight haze. Caramelly, slightly biscuity aroma is relatively mild. Sweetish, slightly chewy malts and some top esters for nuance. Hits some of the characteristics of steam beer, which is pretty cool since most "steam" beers don’t. Nice work.

Draft @ brewpub. Am told this is one of the beers the brewer drinks. Light copper with decent head. Aroma is malty but very--too--subdued. Is not forthcoming, only has some faint mushroom. Soft body. Balanced towards the sweet side but has solid, sturdy malt character, nutty and earthy. Decent, just not my thing.

Odd to find a California steam here, but as explained by the brewers this is not a traditional steam but a cold fermented steam. Sounds like a small difference but by modifying the fermentation they get slower fermentation and surprisingly more ale-like yeastiness. I was not sure I actually liked the yeasty flavors in a steam but as the beer warmed up I warmed up to it. Amber, good head, great mouth.
1.7 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20 TerenceHua (87) - , SINGAPORE - FEB 27, 2009
Cluttered aroma comprising of fruits and some sort of garden feel. Highly bitter. Rather unbalanced. Certainly not a fantastic drinking experience and, at odds with your palate. Some sweetness to it, although I don’t know whether its due to an inherent ingredient or the fermentation process or because it’s so bitter that the relief your taste buds feel on recess is misconstrued.

Singapore is odd place to find a steam beer but the brewer at this brewpub is Canadian and he knows his stuff. This seemed a fair stab at a very North American style. Burnt sienna in colour with good head retention. The aroma was hard to draw out but eventually showed candied oranges, some toffee and faint pine needles. Very soft mouthfeel, reminiscent of an English cask ale. Good initial flavours of ruby grapefruit and chewy nuts but it seemed to fall away a little in the mid-palate before a nice limey finish, similar to the Golden Ale. I liked this. (Draught at brewpub)

Draught at the brewpub Golden color. Delicate Ale, with high bitterness, some malt, light fruitness.

OK, I take the taxi from my hotel at about 10:20pm to visit the pub. Get out of the air conditioned car and am immediately rendered sightless by the humidity settling on my glasses. So what else should I order but a steam beer. This climate is certainly one for such a beer. It reminds me of a Kolsch actually, with a fruitiness on the palate and a soft hop presence. It presents as a common or garden ale/lager and is innofensive in nose and taste. Really an easy drinking beer for the place but not one that really excites the palate. Well made though and so in keeping true to style it is an obvious success.
