This is the lightest style of weizen beer. The grist contains a large portion of wheat, which lends a distinctive note to the malt body and aroma. This style has significant haze and cloudiness. Also, it has been brewed with a traditional Bavarian weizen yeast, which gives it a pronounced clove and spicy character, as well as banana and bubblegum, and even some slight vanilla notes. Available June through September.

Tap. Pours a cloudy yellow with a frothy white head. The nose is pretty basic, light esters, a little yeastiness, wheat. There’s a nice basic Hefe flavor, lightly fruity, some bananas, light yeastiness. Light to medium bodied with fizzy prickly carbonation. An OK effort, but nothing that stands out.

Taster on tap at the brewpub. Almost entirely hazy golden color. Nice, thicker creamy-looking white head, that leaves good, full, thick sheets of lace. Lighter body. Smooth, creamy, lighter carbonation and texture. Lightly dry finish. Nice light banana, light spice, light lemon aroma... Overall it’s a touch mild, but everything that’s there is very tasty. Good moderate sweet taste, lightly zesty, light tanginess to it, and a good bit of spiciness. Great, easy-drinking, refreshing and flavorful hefeweizen. I think this would be a good one to swig down quickly on a hot day. For the air-conditioned indoor bar, though, a little more body and flavor would make this near-perfect.

UPDATED: NOV 14, 2012 On tap, grabbed a few sips from my wife who ordered it. Color was hazy-yellow with a small lasting white head. Aroma of bananas and clove. Taste was wheaty and sweet, moderate body. We both agreed it was a good choice.

Matt brought a growler of this over to the house a few weekends ago. Thanks! This beer appears yellow and extremely hazy. There is a large head and generous amounts of lacing on the glass. Aromas are typical Bavarian hefeweizen: banana, clove, wheat. This beer is tasty and refreshing - ideal for hot summer weather. This is without a doubt one of the better German style hefeweizens brewed in the U.S. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will be having it on a much more regular basis, now that I’m aware of it.

Draft sampler at brewpub. Cloudy yellow color, small head that didn’t completely disappear, light body, good, interesting, predominatelyy sweet taste--the clove isn’t overdone. Good for style. Tasted on 7/05/2009.
