Enjoyed a pint of this beer in January 2013. The beer had a deep brown/black color with a dark copper/ruby hue and was somewhat clear, with a small off-white/tan head with fairly short retention, but good lacing and cling. Its aroma featured some light caramel malt blended with tones of nuts and cereal, and a blend of earthy and grainy hops. It had a lightly sweet caramel malt flavor mixed with a blend of cereal and nut, along with some bitter earthy and grainy tones. The body was somewhat creamy and wet, with low carbonation and light fizz and life, and a medium-full mouthfeel that left a dry, lightly chalky aftertaste.

Draft at Monocacy Brewing. Pours opaque dark brown with a thin tan head. Tastes smoked, woody, roasted, of coffee beans. Light body and low carbonation. Smells like coffee and toasted grains.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with creamy, off-white head. Aroma is figs, raisins, chocolate, floral notes, and toasted malts. Flavor is roast and chocolate malts, light smoke, dark fruit esters, and faint hop bitterness; dry finish. Light/medium body and low carbonation.

12 oz. Opaque black with a lasting cover of creamy bubbles. Nose is dry cocoa, caramel apple, light ash and coffee. Tastes of dry cocoa, ash, blackstrap molasses, and light notes of sour cream and tart apple. Has an ultra-smooth medium body with low carbonation. A touch to the sweet side with fruity notes that I think come from an English ale yeast, but tamed a bit by the ashy-roast finish that almost develops into a tobacco like aftertaste.
