Commercial Description:
During the fermentation of the first batch of this Abbey-style dubbel, the yeast «died» and was «resurrected» by brewer Chris Cashell. This beer is not unlike those that certain Belgian monks have been brewing since the 16th century. Made with five types of barley malt and lots of sugar, this beer is quite strong and flavorful, without being too sweet.

Bottle courtesy of mwelsh13. Pours mahogany brown with an off white head. Smells of dry malt, grassy, some residual sugar. Tastes of spice, caramel, sweet malt, perfumy, some dryness on the finish.

750ml from State Line. Pour is fairly lively, as is the case with many BA beers. Soft and somewhat understated nose doesn’t leave much of an impression beyond malts and sweet fruits, kind of a by-the-numbers dubbel aroma. The body is moderate, with prickly carbonation that’s fairly pleasing. Flavors are somewhat more complex, with some nutty flavors blending well with sharp yeast and herbal notes. Solid.

5/27/09 notes: on tap at Brewpub. Aroma has soft dried fruit, toffee sweetness and crème brulee toastiness. Appears orange-brown with a small head. Flavor is softly sweet, of dried red fruit likely strawberry. Pretty simple overall. OK to drink, but I’m not thrilled.

Had this on tap and never would have guessed it was a duppel. Aroma was bread and yeast. I didn’t get any of the spiciness in the aroma or flavor.

Had this on tap a while back, but it was so cold I couldn’t taste anything. Now that I’ve got a bottle at cellar temperature I can rate it and appreciate it - and I do appreciate it. Perfect pour - hazy medium brown color with a huge billowing head. Nice lacing inside the glass. Aroma of Belgian yeast, bread, and spices. Taste is bread, spice, yeast and sugar. No alcohol in the taste or aroma. Slightly bitter, flavorful finish. This beer is well-balanced and very drinkable. Outstanding.

Thanks eagle. Poured an orange color with major head like a coke head. Aroma was lots and lots of coriander, plums. Flavor was to much pils malts, and metallicness ewwww. To carbonated and that metallic ruined it for me.

A bit harsh, bitter. Not really a great belgian beer, imo. Just some off flavors, not very clean, did not seem very dubbel-like.

On tap at Sean Boland MD. Dark amber color nice even head. Carmels malt sweet and fruity smooth mouth with a great finish. I love this beer.
