During the fermentation of the first batch of this Abbey-style dubbel, the yeast «died» and was «resurrected» by brewer Chris Cashell. This beer is not unlike those that certain Belgian monks have been brewing since the 16th century. Made with five types of barley malt and lots of sugar, this beer is quite strong and flavorful, without being too sweet.

Bottle, 75cl corked, courtesy of fonefan. It pours with lots of microfloaties. Dark orange-golden body and an off-white head. Fruity-sweet nose with alcohol and some white sugar. Sweet, caramel flavor with a nice spice profile. Alcohol and fruits as well. Some bitterness in the finish. Warming, fizzy and full-bodied. Overall a nice beer, but the alcohol is a bit too evident, and it could use a little less carbonation. 091024

Bottle, 7.0%. Refreshing CO2 aroma. Hazy amber colour. The flavour is caramelly, nicely sweet. Has a little rough bitterness in the finish, but that rounds off the beer OK. Tastes like a Belgian beer all right.

Bottle at the Funky 6. Lightly hazed, amber pour with a frothy, off-white head. Dark, dried fruits and Belgian yeast on the nose. Flavor is fairly sweet, malty, with caramel, light roast, prunes and mild bitterness. Medium in body with average, creamy carbonation. Sweet, lightly warm on the finish with dark, candied fruits lingering. Very good beer.

A: The pour is a nice amber color with a short lived off-white head. S: Lots of different sugar influences in the nose in the form of toffee, caramel, and candi sugar. A mix of different fruits as well, such as pears, apples, plums, and perhaps some banana. Slight spice (clove) and yeast notes, too. T: Again, lots of sweet malts and sugar notes along with a definite Belgian yeast character. Some dark fruits, pears, apples, caramel, and candi sugar along with just a subtle spice flavor. M: A medium body with a high level of creamy and smooth carbonation. D: This was pretty good. I didn’t have incredibly high hopes after having some other canned Belgian style beers (Siamese Twin and Monk’s Blood), but this one exceeded expectations.
