3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 tsarman (794) - Northern, New Jersey, USA - JAN 6, 2005
A beer for the Restofus? A fine christmas beer that was hearty and spicy. Clove and ginger evident. A delightful beer from a great bar.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 DocLock (6826) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 6, 2005
Draft at the Drafting Room, Exton. Dark brown/ruby pour (slightly cloudy) with medium, creamy, off-white head. Aroma of malt, hops, spices, florals. Tastes fruity, spicy, with finishing hops and malt. Nice balance and complexity.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 pobenohne (504) - Northern Liberties, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 1, 2005
Draft at the Abbaye. Remarkably similar to Anchor’s 2004 Xmas ale - just without the smoke. Heavy cola presence. Hints of clove and licorice.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 dolemike1 (1288) - Jeannette, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 22, 2004
Had no idea this was classified as a Belgian Strong ale when i drank it. Poured a reddish brown, cloudy, tan head, aroma of potent winter spices, such as cinnamon and nutmeg as well as clove, flavors were spicy, much like those in a spiced winter beer, with a decent malt backbone, as it warmed it did change slightly with a more prevalent yeasty and fruity flavor being noticed. Odd, yet quite intriguing
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 guzzler67 (1435) - Hanover, Maryland, USA - JAN 18, 2004
Hazy orange appearance with an average size head that left good lacing on the glass. Yeasty aroma developed as it reapproached room temerature. An herbal, pepper spice taste that was balanced by a fruity, green apple flavor. Slightly bitter, dry finish.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 dberger624 (1028) - Phila, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 2, 2004
Draft at the Grey Lodge in Philly. Nice Belgian. Had a slight spice flavor in the start. The alcohol was hidden pretty well.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 egajdzis (4949) - Spring Mount, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 29, 2003
I didn't know how this ws classified until I got home to look at the site. This poured a reddish color with a tan head and some lacing. When I first sniffed it I asked dberger624, "Is this a spiced ale?" While cold there was a sweet aroma of spice, clove, bubblegum and banana. This turned into barnyard funk, bread and sour cherry, when warmed. The taste started out sweet and malty, cherry was always present in the flavor. As it warmed it turned into a sour and slightly tart cherry flavor. In my mind it went from a spice/herb/vegetable to a flemish sour ale. But a mild sour at that, it was very enjoyable. The best Brewers Art brew i've had to date.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Holdwine (1050) - Beertimore, Maryland, USA - MAY 8, 2003
This ale looked good and started fine, but it went down hill rapidly. Too spicy, weak and wattery. Maybe I got a bad keg. Still a decent drink, but not what I have come to expect from this brewer.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 urbnhautebourg (997) - Annapolis, Maryland, USA - JAN 13, 2003
UPDATED: MAR 29, 2003 Brewery says that stylistically this is "close" to an abbey double, but not quite. Big rocky head that lasts all the way down. Big, bold and complex fruit and mouth. Great creamy palate and balanced sweetness. Amazing replication of trappist ale. Captures every element I look for. Surprisingly inexpensive, as well. A Baltimore beer that would hold its own in Brussels.
