COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewers Special is a robust brown ale full of malt character. The deep, bronze body awaits the discerning drinker below a substantial foamy, light tan head. As it’s name suggests, this is no ordinary Brown Ale. At 6.6% ABV this beer is a testament to the craft of the American Brewer. The noticeable strength is balanced by an impressive malt backbone from imported Maris Otter barley, the complex flavor profile comes from a combination of crystal, victory and roasted malts while the hopping rate for this ale (33 IBU’s) ensures that the malts don’t overpower but retain the upper hand while vying with the persistent alcohol to ensure a consistently pleasurable experience to the bottom of the glass. So beware, this Special Brown ale is deceptively easy drinking for its strength!

Bottle. Pours with a clear chestnut brown hued body with a lofty, creamy, off-white head that lasts and leaves good lace. Aromas are nutty, earthy, light chocolate, spicy hops, bready and biscuity. Flavors are of toffee, a touch of diacetyl, malty, chocolate, nutty, cereal, caramel with a medium to medium-light bitterness. Medium carbonation. Decently dry, medium to medium-light bodied.

Bomber from Beverages 4 Less in Santee, CA. Fred covers the area! Pours dark ruddy copper with a creamy beige head. Aroma is chocolate, sort of like Horlick’s. Med body. The flavor makes me think of old timey chocolate flavored breakfast drink/food. It’s malty sweet, with chocolate, but there’s enough bitter to make it on the bitter side. Might be one of the best brown ales. Having said that, I ask why there should be brown ales? Likely to make us grateful for the imperial and sour ales. Having said that, this might be really cool if it was amped up to imperial status.

Really underwhelming. If you want something simple to complement your burger, it’s not bad at all. But really a boring beer.

Tap @ the brewery. Pours a mostly clear deep brown with a small off white head. Nose of faint hops, roasted malts and some nutty qualities.

Draft. A red-brown beer with a thin beige head. The aroma has notes of malt and caramel as well as an odd brett like edge, and some citrus fruits. The flavor is sweet malty with a light acidic edge and notes of brettanomyces, lemon, and caramel as well as a bit of nuts, leading to a dry and lightly tart finish.

On tap at SD Brewing Co. Brown/red in the glass. Copper dark. Strong mocha/eggshell head. Nose is sweet malt. Taste is big sweet and WAY too strong roasted malt bitterness. Nutty and blood. Too sweet.

Hazy mahogany with a medium to large beige and slightly creamy head. Sweet aroma with roasted malt, caramel, nuts, chocolate and hops. Flavor came out slightly sweet with roasted malt, caramel, nuts, chocolate, hops and dark fruit. Finished fairly dry and slightly bitter.

Served on tap at the San Diego Brewers Guild Festival 2009. The appearance is clear nut brown. The flavors and aromas are roasted nuts and malts with a light little spice, and a touch of caramel. Solid brown ale.

On tap. Pours dark brown with an orange hue and an off-white head. Lightly nutty nose. Medium body, hard roasted malts and nuts. Fairly bitter finish, some of it from the malts I believe. 080709
