Had at Detroit Fall Beer Fest. Dark. Smokey nose and malt character. The ancho chilies are very, very faint.

Sample at 2013 MBG Winter Beer Festival. Peppery with just the right amount of smoke. More body than I expected.

Draft at the brewpub, Grand Rapids. Deep hazy garnet body, medium cream head. Peppery nose with lots of smoke and dark chocolate. Peppery body, soft, mostly smoke and toast with modest heat.

Pawola22 (3262) - Woodridge, Illinois, USA - OCT 27, 2012
On tap at the brewpub. Pours a deep, ruby-brown colored body with a finger-width, creamy, beige head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is light smoke, earthy pepper, Belgian yeast, a few fruity esters, and a lightly sweetened bready malt. Flavor is similar. Fruity esters, light smoke, earthy and green pepper, Belgian yeast, and a light bready malt. Finishes clean, lightly smoky and earthy, and somewhat dry with a good amount of Belgian yeast. Fairly lengthy aftertaste following a medium body and a moderate carbonation. Overall, a good rauchbier that balances everything nicely, but doesn’t seem quite smoky enough. The Belgian yeast is nice and the pepper adds a bit of an earthiness. Not bad.

Draft. Poured clear ruby color with an average creamy light brown head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate roasted earethy pepper and smoke aroma. Medium to full body with an smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy earthy smoke flavor with a medium to heavy earthy spice finish of moderate to long duration. Complex interesting beer.
