3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
16 oz can served in an over-size glass mug. Large vessel recommended since this ale has a huge frothy tan head.
A Belgian-American fusion beer that works. The aroma shifts back and forth between yeasty-fruity wet leather and American hops. The taste seems more stable but again has the Belgian and American (hops) aspects in nice balance. Moderate complexity and mild bitterness.
Feel: lively, medium body; good carbonation.

Pours a nice ruby/copper colour with a soapy head. Caramel, oranges and grass in the aroma. I donít find it to be overly hop forward and what Iím getting is more rich malts. Quite drinkable but not amazingly so.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
High carbonation, fruit flavors, and Belgian yeast bitter finish rounds out this solid IPA. Flavors of mango, pineapple, light malts, and bitter hopping are surrounded by a peppery finish from the Belgian yeasts. Very solid Belgian IPA.

Great on both tap/from can. Deep red pour with seconds of tannish head. Belgian yeast with surprising dry hop character. Insert phallic jokes here (haha... insert).

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: AUG 12, 2014 Can: Awesome crimson, ruby red, & mahogany color with nice clarity & a very frothy, slowly receding eggshell head. Aroma is very earthy & piney on the hop side with lighter critic & floral undercurrents. Light cleanser smell to it with a somewhat sweet, malty backbone. More citrus & tangerine comes out with warmth. Taste is bitter hops up front; piney, grassy, & woodsy with light orange & grapefruit notes. Sweet malt carries things to the finish, almost caramel & candy like. Mildly musty & dirty aftertaste.

Vivant Flight draught. 28viii13. Easily the standout beer of the evening, this is more of a hop-forward red ale than a Belgian-style IPA. Confident US hop citrus notes harmonising off round and pleasant caramel&red berry malts and some peppery spice. Modest compared to the WI/MI competition but good and above your average brewpub beer-of-the-week. Just a pity it is hard to come by any foam in US brewpub pints...

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
No canning date. $3.49 for a 16oz can. Poured into S.A. Perfect Pint Glass
Appearance: What the hell. I barely moved the can, but even then, I poured it into a glass and the whole pint glass filled with foam with maybe an ounce of beer. Because the head wouldnít go anywhere, I had to spoon out a bunch of foam. Big Red Coq is a beautiful, hazy red color with a light tan, creamy head, and great lacing. I give it a 3 for appearance though because I had to spoon the equivalent of three ounces of beer out of my glass. Looks great after that though.
Smell: It smells a touch Belgian, but itís not much. There are plenty of hops and malts to go around in the aroma. The hops are mostly grassy, and the malt gives a sweet note to make it even more inviting. Smells fantastic.
Taste/feel: Quite interesting. That slight, Belgian sourness is definitely there, but itís not too much. The hops arenít as "bursting" as I thought theyíd be, judging by the taste. The malt flavor is of caramel and sweetness, and it works well. This is an odd beer, and Iím not sure how to describe it, but itís really good. This is sour, sweet, and a bit bitter. The aroma makes Big Red Coq smell like an IPA (I wish MINE did...), but the taste is distinctively Belgian. For some reason, itís difficult for me to pull out specific flavors in this beer. Itís just interesting. Itís like a red in that it has plenty of the malt and sweetness that youíd expect, IPA-esque in that it smells like one and has a pretty significant hop flavor, and then it tastes Belgian because of the yeast. As it warms up, the sourness becomes more prominent. The feel on this beer is middle of the road, with a pretty active-but-pleasant carbonation.
This is unlike any other beer Iíve had before... an amber with more hops than usual, and Belgian yeast. Extremely unhelpful review, but I CAN tell you that itís a very tasty beer thatís worth picking up if you can.

Had at Brewery Vivant's tap room in Grand Rapids with Raith. This is a very nice beer. Amber orange pour. Lots of hops on the nose. Very nice.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
This canned Belgian is orange-red in color with an off white head. It has the Nose of a sweet, red Belgian, and is very pleasant. A Belgian character is strong in the flavor, with graininess and high end caramel flavors prominent. The finish is bittersweet. Overall, itís not too Belgian to handle, but still distinctively so.
