COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Farm Hand: French Style Farmhouse Ale 5.5% abv 16 oz Becher glass There was a time in old world France when nearly every family farm had a brewery. A necessary part of farm life was to provide a ration of beer to sustain and nourish the laborers and beer was safer to drink than the water of the time. Farmhand is our interpretation of what these rustic beers must have been like. It is slightly cloudy from being made with raw un-malted grains a nd a simple single infusion mash procedure.

Poured from a can into my itty bitty sampler mug at World Expo of Beer in Frankenmuth, Michigan. Appearance: Yellow. Maybe a slight haze, I donít really recall. Head bubbles away pretty quickly. Decent. Smell: The funk youíd expect from a Saison, maybe with some banana notes as well... bready. Taste: Follows the nose. Iím not normally big on "funky" beers for the most part, but Vivant never seems to do me wrong. The Belgian "twang" is there significantly at the start, but the finish is extremely refreshing, which bumps up the rating a tad. A respectable beer. Good, not great. A super refreshing beer with a nice finish.

Drank from can at Tip Top Bar & Grill watching hellhound rockabilly band burn up stage. Got this off advice of Canadian ex-pat at bar. Not overly complex. An easy drinking beer.

16oz can. Thick, hazy, unfiltered orange-yellow body. Thin, patchy head. Not your typical BS US Saison, this one is pretty unique and rustic. Has some funky delicate earthy wheat and mildly sour undertones..reminiscent of a Berliner Weisse in some respects, but has a pleasant rounded backbone, maybe a hint of oats or nutmeg. Quite a unique and enjoyable variation on the style, a great addition to any Saison tasting.

Nose of straw, dried grass, and some yeast. Minimal saltiness... gives it a gose character. Hazy pale gold pour with a wild bubbly head. Lots of wheat, and apple-like sweetness/acidity. Doughy but clean. Seems straight-forward but itís a well constructed drink. Uncomplicated.

Taster on tap at HopCat in East Lansing. Moderately hazy, pale yellow white color. Little white head. Bits of lace. Medium body. Smooth, crisp, lighter tingly carbonation. More dry finish. Nice zesty orange and lemon peel, light spice, light breadiness. Good light tart taste, light sweet. Nice farmhouse ale, enjoyable.

Grand Rapids can. Seriously, why the lower ratings? This is a big, bold saison. An almost syrupy mouthfeel. A little funk and a little earthiness. Tasted good to me.

Sample at Suds on the Shore festival. Golden pour with just the right amount of fruit sourness to make it a very pleasant, easy drinking saison

On tap in Ann Arbor,MI. Hazy yellow gold with a good bit of visible carbonation. Smallish head. Easy drinking with only a touch of funk. T: lightly yeasty and fruity flavor with a clear apricot note. Has a nice sweet/tart balance but clearly leans to the tart side. O: refreshing and very drinkable version of the style with a good bit of complexity.

16 oz can from the brewery (Grand Rapids, MI). Picked up a 4 pack of rates on the way out the door. Figured Iíd start with this while I dump in ratings. Pours a stark yellow golden hue, gentle haze, decent carbonation. A loose bubbly whitish head stays as a small filmy layer, loose ring with ok lacing. Small and soapy. Aromas are a bit of apple, gentle lemony tartness. Some straw, gentle sourdough and bread. A bit of yeast, gentle sourness. Straw, grainy cereal elements, and some crisp gentle earthy florals. Initial is lighter end of the fold, a bit fruity up front. Some gentle earth, light lemon rind. Middle gets a bit more muddled. Doughy, gentle fruit, estery pear and apple. Some decent sweetness in there. Backend is a bit more dry, spicy. Some yeastiness, faint white grape. Grainy, dry finish comes into the fold, bread yeast. Runs the gambit. Solid, a touch underbodied.. and if itís going to be that type of body, itíd be nice if it was more vibrant, light and sunny, without that more muddled sweet middle. Solid, if a bit forgetable.

DRAFT at SWK in Chicago....pours a cloudy yellow with white head. Tart / crisp initial taste; mild / smooth middle; minimal funk....pleasant but nothing outstanding.
