8th July 2012 Opaque dark brown beer, tidy pale tan head. Crispy palate. Mildly sour - like a very watered down Duchesse Du Bourgogne. Coca cola and suppressed red berry fruits. All very mild indeed! Minerally crisp finish. Surprisingly thin and watery for it’s abv but fine.

Pours a dark brown with a gigantic 4 finger and growing tan head that fades to a really nice lacing. Nose is burnt oak, chocolate and caramel. Lots of candied sugar and figs. Taste is very sweet with TONS of milk chocolate and figs. Hint of peaches and bananas. Medium body.

Can shared with tomthompson, darker pour, licorice nose, anise and a weird foreshadow of upcoming tartness. Roasty, licorice, slight tart acidic weirdness. Still pretty good and interesting

16oz. Can. Dark brown pour with an off white head. Aroma s very sweet as is the taste with prunes, raisins and some licorice. Very different, complex and good. As I warms, the sweetness comes down and brings out more of the chocolate flavor.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 BigBeer45 (1118) - Michigan, USA - JUN 6, 2012
Can sampled in a Gulden Draak tulip,
this ale had a dark brown, opaque pour, there was some dark ruby at the bottom of the glass when held up to a light, it had a light tan colored one finger head, this ale was too dark to see through but I did see streams of bubbles flowing up the sides of the glass, this ale left some spots and fingers of lacing on the glass, there was no sediment in the can,
this ale had aromas of dry chocolate (little to no sweetness), dark fruit – light raisin, prune and fig, toasted malt, and licorice (from the star anise),
some molasses aroma without the sweetness as molasses, there was a touch of earth on the nose,
there were flavors of dry chocolate, dark fruit, licorice and dark malt, a little caramel,
there was little to faint sweetness in this beer, the finish was dry with little pepper, some malt, anise and dark fruit flavor trailing,
the mouth feel was a little less than medium, the carbonation was soft, maybe a little too soft, more carbonation would help,
this ale was nice, the aroma was good, but the star anise was a little too much in the flavor, otherwise a nice drink.

UPDATED: JUN 6, 2012 From Rayl101! Pours a clear dark mahogany. Aroma of anise, cardamom, pepper, raisin. Taste is anise and almost roasty, sweet and some metallic notes. Medium bodied with a dry finish. It is an interesting beer, but a little heavy handed on the anise, which is something I normally love.
3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 flatmatt (870) - Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA - MAY 27, 2012
16 oz can. Pours a very deep red brown with a tan head. Very nice aniseed aroma with perhaps some earthy and cocoa hints. Flavors of cocoa syrup and aniseed, cherry, red grape/raisin, earthiness. Actually a touch of jalapeño somewhere in there. Just a bit too much, unbalanced. It’s pretty good, but I’ve got to take it a bit slowly.

On tap at The Laundry, Fenton, MI...a hugely complex concoction of herbals and dark chocolate covered raisins. It had my attention with every sip as it readily asserted itself. Looking forward to drinking this again...

Very dark brown pour, light brown head. Aroma is sweet and reminds me of a spice cake mixed with fruitcake. I get lots of prunes and raisins. Flavor is sweet up front, loads of raisins, a light tart note creeps in and finishes with a very light bitterness. This is a very neat beer. Enjoyable.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 HonkeyBra (2483) - Lemont, Illinois, USA - MAY 13, 2012
16 oz. can. Dark brown near black pour with a medium tan head. Aroma of anise, candi sugar, chocolate, raisins and plums. Pretty startling how fruity it is. Flavor is strong on the anise and dark fruits: raisins, plums, currants, grapes. There are notes of chocolate as well as mild toffee notes as well. Some notes of dark bread and candi sugar. Mouthfeel with relaxed carbonation and medium to full bodied. Finishes with a bit of nyquil. Interesting beer from a great upcoming brewery.
