One of our most anticipated and highly talked about specialty releases, This hearty dark ale is fermented with our rustic Belgian yeast strain which gives the beer a farmhouse tartness followed by big dark chocolate notes, and hints of black cherries. Fermentation temperatures often climb past 90F which builds the distinctive flavors. No adjuncts are added to this beer-- these robust layers of flavor are yeast driven. Listen to the lunatic.

Sample at Brewery Vivant on 3/29/13. Black pour with a thin beige head. Aroma of malt, licorice, metal and vinegar. Malty and sour flavor with some chocolate before a roasty and sour finish.

Can: Poured a deep pitch-black color ale with a medium size dark brown foamy head with good retention. Aroma of roasted malt with tart cherry notes, some tart notes and some black chocolate. Taste is a complex and rich mix of cherry, roasted malt deep black chocolate notes with light lingering residuals sugar notes with plenty of fruits notes. Body is full with an oily texture and medium carbonation with no apparent alcohol. This is a very complex mix which is not as tart as I was expecting. I could see myself drinking this once in awhile but just too powerful for regular consumption.

A more acidic roastiness than would be desired in aroma, but plenty appreciable. Implies a powerful, potent brew. A robust, sexy appearance, even with only the rim of a head. Lacto-sour dominance of flavor. Mouth puckers strongly. Similar to Jollys Madrugada... for which I have a soft spot, though less robust and lower viscosity. In sum, one of the two best sour stouts Ive had, easily.

Draft at Jerrys. Black with somewhat whispy brown head (barrel-aged?) / Bold, interesting nose of coffee, chocolate, dark fruit, fruit bread / Medium body, tart, soft carbonation, inky with some sweetness, with fair finish / Fruity, clean flavors of old coffee, chocolate, dark cherry, raisin, licorice / Somewhat simple.

Super tart taste as the name says. A tart stout like beer. Cherry flavor. Dark pour with tan head

On tap @ Farmhouse. Opaque dark brown, minimal head. Strongly tart/sour nose, barrel traits, dark malts. Palate presents a perfect balance between roasty malts, lactic sourness, and sweet vanilla barrel character. Finish is very dry and tart. What Tart of Darkness should be!

This is a dark beer that tastes a lot like coffee. It is very high alcohol percentage but it is very smooth actually. Great beer.

Can. Pours a deep, viscous black with small head after a very aggressive pour. Aroma is stale coffee and some slight chocolate. Similar to pouring said stale coffee on a hostess chocolate cake. Taste has sour notes within the first taste but that quickly subsides with the coffee coming on. Coffee dominates as the beer warms to the point of just being a sour coffee drink. Would not look for this again.

Draft. Tart, sweet; interesting combination of fruitiness and roast malt. Went very nicely with my meal.

This is easily the most interesting and probably the best beer Ive had from Vivant. You read "Farmhouse" and you expect one thing, you drink this, even see this, and you have to rethink your previous understanding. Dark fruit, licorice, and plenty of tartness. Dark in appearance and rich. This was offered to me during my first stay in Grand Rapids by my hosts in 2013.
