3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Tall boy can served in a Lost Abbey stemmed glass.
A: Pours a chilled light amber color with a frothy light yellow head forming on the pour. It recedes to a solid collar with a thin film. Small splotches of lace left around the glass.
S: Big funk up front with some orange zest and a pale malt backbone. Light lemon pledge, some barnyard and some fresh hay.
T: Barnyard and mildly cheesy funk. Grassy fresh hay, pale malts zesty tangerine sweetness and some lemon grass with a clean finish.
M: Nice light body with a bit of bite. Medium carbonation and a sweet, but clean finish.
O: Nice funky saison with great citrus zest. Pretty solid start to my Brewery Vivant beers I’ve got in the fridge.

Courtesy of JPDurden24. I dig the novelty of a 9% saison in a 16oz can, that is cool. The can pours up with a clear deep gold body that supports a thin off white head of foam. The aroma delivers up some earthy notes, spicy saison yeast, sweet apple like esters and a bit of lemon nuanced vinegar. The taste turned out to be similar and pulls together saison yeast spices, sweet apple and somewhat pear like fruity esters and then a mild vinegar note that holds this whole thing together.

16 oz can. Pours a light honey color. Very small white head. Unusual aroma of citus and grape. Flavor of orange, spice, and peppercorn finish. Has some thickness. Nice mouthfeel. Alcohol is very well hidden. Didn’t feel like 9%. Would have liked more spice in a saison.

This one tastes like grapefruit juice. Decent bitterness, sweet but nowhere near 9% sweet. Alcohol is well-hidden. A great surprise.

Bottle from trade with umich03jm. Pours a very light golden color, with moderate head, and a Belgian pale sort of aroma with hints of lemon. Nice. Taste is very reminiscent of Belgian pale but with strong notes of lemon and sour apple, all pretty balanced. Middle holds up nicely, and the finish lingers with the flavor. Sort of a Belgian pale with more going on. Nice surprise.

2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
A big fluffy lightly golden colored head slowly falls. It sits atop a hazed golden beer. Yeast, pale malts, and peppers are found in the nose. The flavor isn’t quite what I expected. Those pale malts are tasted and in the beginning get little help. Slowly the peppers creep in and they are subtle. Actually, this favors some high gravity beers with some pepper thrown in. This was a bit of a mess.

Draft to tulip at Hop Cat (from notes). Looks good; honey-colored with thin white lacing. Smells sweet and spicy. Tastes like it smells with some banana in there too. Mouthfeel is good too. Good beer!

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft at Zingermans Roadhouse.
Lovely pour into a large snifter, glowing gold-amber and gently sticky along the sides of the glass. Pineapple and mango aroma, nice sticky winter saison palate, orange peel apparent but peppercorns far backgrounded. Restrained, almost minimal funk but none of the overly-estered American saison flaws that are so common to the style. Delicious.
