UPDATED: OCT 3, 2015 Brewfist ’IPA’, or so it is called, with thick and rocky, egg shell-white, ’Brugues lace’-sticky head and misty golden blonde colour with ochre hue. Aroma of freshly cut sorrel and nettles, green apple peel, wet straw, green plum, grass, freshly grated ginger root, white pepper, strong chamomille flowers - I’m in Flanders’ fields rather than in present-day IPA world. Crisp, restrainedly fruity onset, unripe wood fruits, raw rhubarb sourishness, unripe pineapple, undergoing a medium strong, slightly minerally carbonation with a vague salty edge; a strange apple juice-like fruit sweetness appears in the middle (out of nowhere), overseeing a pale, lightly bready malt sweetishness and subtle spicy yeastiness. Ends in drying, crisp, grassy and leafy hop bitterness with a dried citrus peel quality to it and letting a lot of the bready malt sweetness and yeasty fruity and spicy ’Belgian’ effect to pass through. Everyone seems to need a saison nowadays and many fail to master the concept; Brewfist, apparently capable of delivering a good example, bizarrely sells this saison as an IPA. What went wrong there? This is a full-fledged saison in the most authentic sense of the word: if I had tasted this ten or fifteen years ago, I would have ascribed this to some Hainaut brewery. This fascinates me: were the creators of this beer too shy to call it a saison, and opted for the easy-going desingation of IPA instead? If this is the case, I, for one, am sure this was an ill-fated decision, as this lovely beer is a lot more credible as a saison than as an IPA (regardless of substyle)...

Nice stuff. To Ol are usually on point. Light and lively. Tart, zingy, grapes. Smooth, lemony aftertaste. A bit winey and almost saison like.

Pours very pale yellow without head, slight lacing. Aroma is faintly sweet and bready. Flavour is full of steely bitterness that you expect from lager, fuller bodied and slightly maltier than a standard lager. Enjoyable but not great ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

(bottle, 33cl) Hazy, pale golden colour with a blond and short foamy head. Fruity hoppy aroma with notes of grapefruit, pineapple and cocos. Moderately bitter flavour, light to medium bodied with a moderate carbonation. Dry pale malt character with moderately fruity, slightly piney and spicy hops; moderately bitter hoppy and mildly fruity finish with notes of grapefruit and cocos in the aftertaste. A tad slim for an IPA. 03.VI.15

Alla spina. Aroma fruttato, erbaceo, erba appena tagliata. Al palato secca ed erbacea, non troppo intensa.
