Tap at Sail & Anchor. Pours black with a small beige head. Nose shows heavy roasted coffee and dry, roasty malts. Light chocolate. Taste is focused heavily on espresso tones with a lingering dry and piney hopped finish. Solid stuff

Bottle. Appearance: Absolute jet black, thick brown head. Aroma: Yes! Pine needles, a hint of cattiness, quite malty but the hops certainly overwhelm. Smells great. Flavour: Chocolate and pine needles, quite a thick creamy mouthfeel, coffee, lots of wood with a chewy hoppiness, the alcohol is well hidden and there’s a wonderfully long hoppy finish. Lovely.

21/VI/13 - 33cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker) @ home - BB: 30/4/14 - lot 3162 (2013-574)

Clear dark brown beer, big creamy beige head, pretty stable, very adhesive. Aroma: lots of citrus, exotic fruits, pineapple, passion fruits, bit piny, resinous, hint of mocha in the back. MF: lots of carbon, medium body. Taste: at first there was very little, because the beer was to cold. As it was warming up, I got a real flavour explosion. Some caramel, lots of citric hops, sour touch, bitter and dry, exotic fruits, slightly roasted flavours, some caramel. Aftertaste: very bitter, hoppy, grassy, some citrus, grapefruit, exotic fruits, hint of dried fruits. Very complex and lovely beer. But give it time to warm up!

Davros (1869) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - JUL 1, 2013
Pours very dark brown with a small fading head. Aroma of roasted malt, soft coffee, piny and grapefruit-like hops. Great flavours at first with roasted malt, pine and resinous hops before the booze and bitterness steam-roll through in a harsh finish. Carbonation seems a little full-on.

(Keg at Black Door, 20130625) The beer poured black. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had fruitiness, pine, mildly roasted malts and liquorice. Palate was medium bodied and warming with medium carbonation. Flavours were fruitiness, pine, liquorice, hint of roasted malts, some ash and quite strong bitterness. Afteraste was hoppy and bitter. A well done Black IPA. The roasted components were nicely in the background. Neverheless, this style annoys me - the fact that won’t prevent me from liking this beer.

Bottle shared at the hotel with the Nellser - picked up at Domus Birrae. Pours deep brown tip a foamy beige head and strong lacing. The aroma holds burnt brown bread, some grapefruit, light dry cocoa. Medium sweet flavor, some dirt and earth, mild baking cocoa, slight roast, dry grapefruit, faint berries. Medium bodied with average to lively carbonation. Light resinous but burnt pine to finish, some further dry grapefruit, orange, earth, dirty grass. Decent.

On tap @ Beer Temple. Black color. Uneven beige head, OK lacing. Aroma’s: from the glass - notably piney hops, some roast; retronasal it’s heavy roast, a bit of drop/licorice. Flavor is roasted, moderately bitter & lightly sweet, hint of acidity. Medium bodied. Finishes rather dry, roast, ash, bitter & herbal. Nice one.
