Kauge (152) - Tallinn, ESTONIA - SEP 26, 2014
33 cl bottle from Tallinna Kaubamaja (€ 4,60) in Sept 2014. Pours a very dark brown with a huge tan head that retains extremely well and leaves some islets of lacing. Nose is very roasty, bitter chocolate and cold coffee, a bit sugary and hinting at the bitterness... Taste is indeed bitter, but more at the end, whereas in the beginning it’s fairly sweet with notes of caramel and chocolate most pronounced. Also some dry, ashy roastiness. Medium body, slightly oily or slick mouthfeel. An active but thin carboration. Finish is dry, bitter and roasty. Overall it’s got a certain in-your-face attitude, it’s somewhat robust and edgy, yet terribly enjoyable.

33 cl from Melgers @ home. €1,- only, because 2 months past the bb date. Almost black color. Big beige head with good retention. Aroma’s: heavily roasted malts, burnt wood, slightly salty/umami, with some (milk-) chocolatey sweetness retronasal. Flavor is moderate sweet, roasted, light fruit. Medium bodied. High carbo (foaming in the mouth). Finishes with lots of roast, chocolate, light sourness, ash and fairly dry bitterness. Nice!

Tap. Definitely a good beer to have off tap, although it’s probably not as fresh as it should be here in Australia...
