***review from July 9, 2008***
Booooooring beer. Got me a dark, dark brown brew with a touch of red, small bubbly tan head and slippery, spotty lacing. The aroma was a let down due to the fact that it was so mild even after letting my glass sit for 45 minutes. All these are slight: toasted malts, coffee (early), sweet, coconut (I think), fruit. Remember, all very faint. I had a hell of a time with the aroma. What was there was incredibly faint but a bit interesting. The taste was good but too weak; early bitterness, sweet, chocolate. Much better warm. Just order one and let it sit while you drink another beer. The mouth feel was smooth as are all the Brewster’s beers, mid sip sweetness and an interesting finish of slight chalk and soft but odd bitterness. Worthy of another shot to see if I can experience the coconut a bit more.

3oz sample glass at Brewsters Pub on 11th ave SW in Calgary, AB. Colour: Almost black..a hint of purple!..low off-white head. Nose. Coconut, melted butter, maple syrup, cocoa. Taste: Medium sweet, medium-light bitter, medium sour. Soft creamed coconut, toasted wood. Fairly straight-forward. Plant-like finish. Average.

Pint on tap at Oliver Square location in Edmonton. Poured a deep brown with hints of red and a beige head with traces of lacing. Aromas of roasted malts and chocolate with a small hint of coconut. Taste is malty sweet with some hints of chocolate and a trace of coconut in the finish. A nice body and low carbonation finish this fine porter off. An enjoyable taster for sure.

Dark pour with small head. Aroma of malts, coffee and a touch of coconut. Taste of roasted malts and a very faint coconut taste in the far background. Very thin mouthfeel, almost watery. Not bad but not good.

Not bad I guess, normal looking porter not much to comment on there. Smells ok, porter plus coconut sun tan loition with hints of coffee. Taste is about the same but the taste is sweet but nothing to bad but probably couldn’t drink more than two in a night though. I got not much to say about this beer it’s simple and you get exactly what you order a porter infused with coconut. Brewster did a not bad job on this I guess?"

Dark color. Medium dry Porter, some caramel and roasted malt, no coconut (luckily). Simple but not bad.

I’m with patricks on this one. The first thing that went through my mind was "why is this called coconut porter"? A fairly solid porter, and I would say a good miss if they were trying for something else. No detectable coconut. Temperature maybe? Pours a dark brown with thick head. Sugary, caramel malt. Body is mid range. Dry finish.

UPDATED: JUL 3, 2008 This was an unusual beer. It was a sampler at the downtown Calgary Brewsters brewpub. I usually am a fan of porters and stouts, so I thought I would try it. fairly apprehensive, I took a sip. It is a great porter with virtually no coconut taste. I could not taste a hint of coconut it the ber. Later the bartender came over and asked my opinion, I said that it was a wonderful porter but couldn’t taste the coconut in it. He siaid that nearly ever person had said that. I don’t know how they incorporated coconut into this porter, but as a porter it was pretty good. Dark black with medium to small frothy off white head which does not dissipate. The taste is dry but not overpowering. The aroma of the beer is of nuts and caramel but definately not coconut. I hope that brewsters refines this brew and puts a more distinguishable coconut flavour into the beer before removng it from their brewpubs.

Sampled at BeerFest 2008 and looking forward to finding it at the bar. Dark beer. Malty aroma with just a trace of coconut. Each sip the coconut flavour surprises. A tasty balance of malt and coconut.
