Bottle, thanks to Cole. Pours clear black/brown, thin pale tan head, spotty lacing. Nose is licorice, smoke, tight roast. Flavours are dusty roast, some mocha, mostly dust. Hollow and weak. Not grooving on this.

Originally reviewed Mar. 1, 2007:
got the draught and head showed super thin to non-existent. what head there was, was light tan colour i'm guessing. as i was drinking, it showed light roping with spotty lacing at best. aroma reflected coffee beans. perhaps as good as safeway brand or western family might be. the taste is like as if i was drinking bitter water. the aftertaste is again, bitter, and very undesirable. it lingers. if i had a choice of stouts to choose from at this place, i wouldn't be choosing this one i'd guess.

Black in colour. Roasted malts and chocolate, typical of a dry stout, thought this is not a great stout. Passable.

Pint on tap at Oliver Square location in Edmonton. Poured a deep black color with some red highlights with a beige head and some spots of lacing. Aromas of roasted malts and coffee. Taste is light malty sweetness and a coffee bitterness blended quite well. I almost always have a pint of this when visiting Brewsters. This is one of my staple beers.

5 ounce sample at the 11th Ave brewpub at 5-beer sampler for $8.50CAD. Not bad.
1.2 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 4/20 asmundgo (10) - Regina, Saskatchewan, CANADA, Saskatchewan, CANADA - JUN 25, 2011
Poured on tap at Brewster’s Regina South last night. Arrived black with almost no head but a lingering light tan ring. No lacing. Aroma is mild burnt coffee with mild sour underneath. Taste is disappointing and, unfortunately, almost absent. Mild hints of chocolate, burnt coffee, and sour something, but none are bold enough. Uninteresting on palate and somewhat dry. I’ve had this stout on several previous occasions and remember it as marginally better than this review. Overall, I would pass on this one, unless you are desperate for a stout and no others are available.

I can’t even wait until the details to put this out there but this was a disgusting pint. I seriously had a hard time finishing it. I think it is possible that this was a bad bottle. I sure hope so… You may think it is unfair to rate this if it is potentially bad. To that I say – NO. I paid for this bottle and I got crap out of it.
The beer poured pitch black and despite a very very aggressive pour the head that developed was almost non existent. It was a tan color. Little to no lacing resulted.
There was no aroma. I seriously tried and tried and I got nothing but water out of it.
I took a swig of this and was greeted with the familiar taste of water – except this time this familiar taste seemed to be permeated with cigarette smoke somehow. This really is not how I remember this beer on tap. Something must be wrong. After the initial gross water taste fades I actually did get a bit of roasted malts and coffee in the finish. This was the highlight of the drink.
The mouthfeel was thin and watery and devoid of carbonation. It was not good.

Pours dark brown with no head. The aroma has burnt coffee, coco powder, and sour cherries. The flavor is a mixture of dirty diapers and burnt coffee. Pretty bad.
2.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 Cole (919) - , Alberta, CANADA - JAN 24, 2011
Pours black beige head. Strong coffee and roasted malt aroma. Smells like strout. Very bitter like burnt coffee. Lots of roasted malt character. The bitterness is out of place. It tastes fine. But, i find it Very burnt tasting and slightly acidic. Not great.

UPDATED: OCT 12, 2010 Update - Oct 12, 2010: mark this day: I got an amazing pour with an inch of thick brown foam. That gas never happened before in over a hundred pints that I’ve drank here. Tons of bitter chocolate. This beer has never tasted, smelled or looked this good. Stellar effort! Maybe an new recipe? Maybe the bartending staff finally will pour a good looking beer.

Not sure why I never got around to reviewing his - probably cause I never order it due to it’s lameness in the past. Somehow it is much improved from what my pea sized brain remembers. Black brew with a light brown ring. It’s very chocolatey now with lesser notes of roast and even lesser notes of coffee. Don’t have a lot of time on my hands so I won’t be letting this warm. Quite choco tasting which is a big improvement but the bitterness has not changed which is ok. Solid coffee taste is tied in tight with the bitterness. It’s still a touch watery but the improvement on the chocolate side mote than makes up for it. Notable improvement moves this up to average.
