The pour produced a decent dark cola colored lager with a rocky-sticky 2 finger cap that lasts well and laces the glass.
Aromas are subtle: some cocoa and sweet bready tones light musty earthy yones.
Medium bodied, fair malt spine, silken mouthfeel, and a more rounded toasy malt character than before.
Up front the toasted dark Munich malts depart some cocoa sweetness that is quickly balanced by light pearl hop presence..mid palate there is more substance in the body with some dried fruit and nut notes and some light souring ...finish is clean and lightly drying with lingering bready aftertastes.
This transition seems to have given Waterloo dark some dunkel characteristics as the hops have been slightly attenuated and the malts beefed up...a pleasant change. vitamine (35), USA

| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/20 | Sep 3, 2006 bottle: Not as impressive a dark beer as stouts like Beamish, but way smoother & vastly superior to the undrinkable Coffee Porter & Tankhouse Ale by Mill Street, or the St. Ambroise stout. Pours dark black with tan head. Light to medium body, light to medium bitterness. Almost no sweetness. HInts of chocolate. Tastes sour in mouthfeel & finish, which really detracts from the rest of this beer. Needs more layers of taste but ok for style. I’m just not a huge fan of dark lagers I guess (why not just buy a smooth & creamy stout or English ale?), but this is atleast drinkable & won’t intimidate your averge beer drinker. beergut111 (210), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Jun 23, 2006 Pours beer-bottle brown with a diminishing but lacy tan head. Aroma of toasty malt with the slightest hint of chocolate. The taste is sweet with malty caramel, brown sugar and fruit. The hops are pretty close to non-existent, as is the finish - which is lightly sour. burnish (13), Milton, Ontario, Canada
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 4, 2006 A mild dark beer. It is a disapointing brew if you are looking for something that will hold you interest. It is light in body, a faint roastiness can be percieved if you look for it. It is otherwise fairly flavourless and unmemorable. wanderingman (54), Guelph, Ontario, Canada

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Apr 24, 2006 Updated: Oct 21, 200620061021 Rerate - 355ml Bottle: I guess there comes a time in every beer reviewers life where they must come to terms with their original beer of choice not being the cunning strategist we once thought it was. Heretofore my vastly overrated #1 beer (4.6) and now fallen after the eventual rerate. Pours nicely with a deep brown and red haze, a decent sized head. Aroma holds an interesting sweetness beside an odd earthy tone. Flavour is quite watered-down, heavy on the middle palate. Very little hops in the taste but I could sense the dry mouth when I was done, so I know they’re there. I think the issue is that they aren’t using character hops and malts, but something relatively generic. I still enjoy it, but I sure did overrate it. My new dark lager beer of choice is King Dark.<P>
20060424 Original: My absolute favourite, a dark lager with tremendous flavour. I’ve turned a lot of people onto this one, and for good reason. While the disappearing head rumours are true, the excellent taste trumps it. (8/4/10/5/19)
