Bridge Road Brewers together with gypsy brewer Mikkel Borg Bjergsø of Mikkeller created a one off brew one Friday evening of March 2012. The result is The Dark Harvest. Inspired by the timing of the collaboration, it was decided to make a dark beer, using locally grown fresh hops. Of several research hops being grown at Rostrevor Hop Garden, one variety stood out for selection and was harvested just hours before being added to this beer.

Opaque black beer, good pale tan head. Smooth palate, very light. Mild fine carbonation. Smooth light milky dark malt, no roast or bitterness, just very light. Whisper of coffee and chocolate. Mild minerals. Not much else here but the dark malt is marvellously smooth and the beer is very drinkable.

On tap @ The Trappist. Nearly black in color with tan foam. Kind of sticky and sugary beer. Lots of roast, licorice, and maybe some tar. There’s an earthy hop character to it along with some canned peach, orange rind, and pine. A bit of an ashy, burnt flavor to the finish which at least sort of makes up for the sweetness by providing a strong bitter character. Not sure what I expected, but wasn’t a huge fan.
