4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
250mL batch 866B
Deep bronze body. Holds a creamy beige head.
Richly complex nose; vinous plum, biscuity malt, vanilla toasty oak, a touch of cheesy lees character with undertones of cherry pip, balsamic and light horsy funk...why hello Brett!
Full rich body, creamy carbonation with a touch of balsamic tartness.
offers an abundance of flavours on the body; rich toffee malts, Port-like dried fruits, cherry pie, vinous red fruits, leafy hop, balsamic reduction, toasted oak, with developing Brett horsy/pineapple/almond funk. Luscious finish, acid and mild bitterness provides balance.
A truely unique beer. Not sure if the Brett character is intentional, but it adds an extra dimension to this beer.

4.5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Quad's are my absolute favourite, and there's barely a high-ranking one I haven't tried (including the Aurora Borealis). Served in a La Trappe glass. $AU20.
Big head, fluffy and good lacing. A deeper brown than some other quads.
Bitter smell, a classic quad dark fruit bouquet, but with a real red wine kick! The barrel-ageing was very impressive; more so than some of De Struise's offerings!
The taste is impressively complex. Deep red Trappist fruits with a sour oaky red wine aftertaste that gets sweeter as it moves further back the tongue. The barrel taste is far more prominent than the Scotch-barrel equivalent. There's some smooth cocoa and sour cherry. Perhaps lacks the magical water taste of Rochefort and the interplay of sweetness and bitterness found in the Westvleteren.
Very pleasant silky chocolately creamy mouthfeel, though perhaps it blends the flavours a little.
Overall, pretty much as good as a quad gets (and this is from a seasoned drinker!) Like the Westvleteren, Rochefort and Pannepuet, it really brings it's own twist into the equation. Not something I had expected from Nogne O who, at times, can fail to deliver on their promises. Such a shame it is in such limited supply, but I am very lucky to have tried it!

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Thrilled to be tasting this! I really like the fuzz around this one, being brought around the world. Pours a dark brown colour with a typical belgian head. Aroma of dark fruits, pepper, dough, red berries from the red wine, oak and some acidity. Such complexity! Taste is also really complex; lot of the same things, together wine some more sweetness and some more sourness. The oak and the redwine does make more of themselfs here, making such a special and unique taste. There are also some slight alcoholic notes in there as well, but it doesn’t damage the experience that much! The finish is long and acid, in good balance. I love the combination of the classic abbey and the sourness which this beer creates. Full body of course, together with a little fizzy carbonation and a quite soft mouthfeel. Overall, this one is going to be remembered for quite awhile, such uniqness. That’s one of the things I love with Nøgne Ø, they have the balls, the effort and the capacity to make such beers as this. I’m really impressed with Aurora Australis!

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. A hazy dark brown beer, with a large, frothy, mostly lasting light brown head. Thye aroma is moderately malty (caramel, toasted dark bread, hint of chocolate), lightly yeasty (dough), with notes of figs, raisins, red wine, wood, vanilla, alcohol, some berries. The flavor is heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Full body, velvety/creamy texture, average carbonation. very long finish with light to moderate bitterness, moderately alcoholic. A nice beer, bold, fruity and vinous. Nice experiment.

If the first beer of the new year is an omen, 2014 is going to be a ripper. This well-travelled Australian-Norwegian collaboration has effectively done a round-the-world trip - from Australia to Norway in a wine barrel and back again by bottle. It’s an atypical quad with a hint of De Dolle (as someone smarter than me points out below. I love the De Dolle range, so we’re off to a flyer.) Lovely appearance: walnut brown with a persistent head. Rich aroma with obvious barrel and red wine notes from the barrel maturation on the trip to Norway. Shiraz barrels would be my guess - definite white pepper on the nose. Also present: blackcurrant, ginger ale and sherbet. The sherbet hints at a sour-sweet character which becomes fully apparent on the tongue. There, the beer reveals itself as an extravagant blend of brown sugars and fruity acids. There are sour cherries, turpentine, shiraz, perhaps even white rum. The body is lush and marshmallow soft. I love beers that take my palate into unexplored territory and this is one of those. Exceptional. (250ml bottle courtesy of Allovate of Perth via Bergstaden of Norway - immense thanks to both for the experience. Batch 866B. BB: 20/12/17)

250 ml bottle. Very dark brown, but clear. Light beige fine head that clings to the glass. Rounded vinegar aroma. Some wood notes. Round malty flavours with quite a bit of alcohol sweetness. Fine carbonation. Wood flavours. Hints of vanilla, but not much. Burnt and charred wood. Interesting beer with some interesting flavours.
