COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Bridge Road crew like to make a statement with their anniversary beers and the 2010 special is no exception. A true melding of styles, the B2 Bomber is a Black Belgian IPA, bringing together darker, roasted malt varieties, a swagful of hops and a Belgian yeast variety in a quite intriguing mix. The combination of aromas when the dark-as-night beer first poured from the black-labeled champagne bottle like a huge, foam-headed espresso had Crafty confused: “A bag of rubber bands?” Further investigation revealed all manner of aromas – changing as it warmed: sugar sweetness, hints of roasted malts, some fruitiness from the Belgian yeast – even a suggestion of ripe banana. In the mouth, the “Belgian” and “IPA” elements come and go in a flash, with the dark, roasty, toasty flavours dominating and leading to a long, very dry finish underpinned by the hops. Big and bold – in keeping with the stark labeling – and a fine addition to anyone’s cellar.

Tap at the Albion: This was a very average beer. I liked what they were trying to do but its just a little boring. No real body or flavour.

A-- Poured dark reddish black, just a little bit of red tints on the bottom of the glass, otherwise black. One finger mocha colored head. Head retained its shape very well and very good head retention. Just bits of lacing streaks or circles on the sides of the glass. Good label of Ned Kelly as well S-- Chocolate, coco powder, candied lemon, orange and grapefruit. Decent amount of hop bitterness in the smell. Well balanced smell with the chocolate and the citrus. T-- Lots of chocolate, coco powder, and roasted malts. Not a real aggressive hop punch but more of death by chocolate. A little bit chewy in the first few sips. As it warms up the hops open up more and are much more assertive in the taste. M-- Medium carbonation and a full bodied beer. Hops come out more in the mouth, grapefruit and lemon and a little bit of a pine finish. Good balance between chocolate and the hops in this. Dry finish. D-- Best effort to date from Bridge Roads.

Tasting at Papsø’s
The color is almost black, with compact beige head. Nice roasted malt aroma, a bit cheesy, cardboard. Good dark chocolate flavor, roasted malts, ashes, burnt coffee; good body strength; correct bitterness. But overall nothing special.

(Sampled at Papsø’s) Pours black with rich, toffee head. Aroma is mostly dark, roasted malt. Medium-bodied, oily texture with medium carbonation and a roasted finish. Taste is dark and moderately bitter. My impression of black IPA is dominated by those that use the new hops such as Citra and Nelson Sauvin and it’s hard for me to detect a hop presence in this one beyond what one finds in a porter.

Bottled. A pitch black beer with a huge dark brown head. The aroma has notes of chocolate and dark malts. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt, chocolate, and roasted malt, as well as hints of ashes, leading to a dry roasted finish.
