4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Threepwood (107) - - DEC 16, 2010
Pitch black with a great mocha head. Aromas are all over the place, coffee, choc & caramel from the malt with some fruit as well. Lovely strong dark malt flavours that really cover up the alcohol. Rich full mouthfeel. This is an outstanding beer, I loved it.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 humlelala (399) - DENMARK - SEP 22, 2011
(Sampled at Papsø’s) Pours black with rich, toffee head. Aroma is mostly dark, roasted malt. Medium-bodied, oily texture with medium carbonation and a roasted finish. Taste is dark and moderately bitter. My impression of black IPA is dominated by those that use the new hops such as Citra and Nelson Sauvin and it’s hard for me to detect a hop presence in this one beyond what one finds in a porter.

Bottled. A pitch black beer with a huge dark brown head. The aroma has notes of chocolate and dark malts. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt, chocolate, and roasted malt, as well as hints of ashes, leading to a dry roasted finish.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Papsoe (22948) - Frederiksberg, DENMARK - SEP 18, 2011
Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of bluebetty. Pours a clear black with a a reddish hue and a light brown head. Roasty aroma. Medium body, sweet roastiness with a lightly tart edge, heavy carbonation, a subtle edge of phenols. Some chocolate appears late. More of a Porter than a Black IPA really. 180911
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Davros (1021) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - JUL 13, 2011
Pours black ruby with a large tan head.
Nose shows cocoa, roasted malt, piney hops and a tangy citrus character.
Big roasty flavours up front, with lots of espresso, before transistioning to that tangy citrus and light fruit. Soft alcohol also shows.
Pretty high carbonation.
That acidic, tangy, citric character is obviously out of place, but otherwise good stuff.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 FlyingWombat (21) - AUSTRALIA - JUN 29, 2011
Enjoyed this beer on several occasions in several forms. It was best fresh in draught form, a real "wow" beer in the local craft beer landscape. It was the awesome Aussie Black IPA that existed before the BIPA really took off here in Australia (everyone is brewing one now!). This review is of a 1 year old aged bottle (750ml), poured into tulip glas. Beautiful solid and consistant black appearance with massive creamy tan head. Big aroma of burnt roasty malts, coffee, biscuit, dark fruits and yeast. Hops have clearly mellowed from the aging. Taste is roasted matls, coffee, chocolate. Mouthfeel is smooth, full and warm. Solid finish, moreish. Easy to drink and enjoy several at once, even thought the alcoholic effect kicks in quick. Probably wouldn’t want to age it any longer, because the yeast seems to be on the edge of turning. But all round...a well crafted beer!
