Bridge Road have used a brand new hop strain called ’Enigma’ for this New World Pilsner. Inspired by the frequently excellent New Zealand pilsners, it is a pilsner that uses the sort of hopping rates and methods brewers typically use when creating a US style Pale Ale. This pilsner has been brewed as an Australian take on the craft pilsners of NZ. A light bodied lager heavily hopped with the new Australian variety, Enigma.

Can’t say I’ve had too many pilseners. This is pretty good though. Straw, bit grassy, lemon and subtle hops. Worth a try.

Not sure I would call this a pilsner. But anyway, a cloudy colour and fizzy pine apple and sherbert tang flavour. Very nice and very hard to place.

UPDATED: DEC 30, 2014 Re-rate. Hay and straw aromas, overcarbonated, grassy.. its ok, expected more hop presence (yes I know it’s a pilsener). But what i do get from the enigma is very tasty indeed.

Pours a cloudy yellow with a white head. Aroma is malt, fruit, citrus and hops. Taste is moderate sweet and fruity leading to a dry finish. Nice stuff.

Bottle. Hazy, pale yellow with a white head. Great aroma, full of fresh citrus and passionfruit. Crisp dry palate with some sweetness dominated by citrus and light tropical fruity notes. So refreshing.

From 330 ml bottle. Pours a hazy straw yellow with a sudsy but lasting white head and fine carbonation. Aromas of lemon zest, cut grass and flowers. Taste is bright citrus at first before a firmer grapefruit note washes through along with a hint of white wine. Washes cleanly across the palate carried by the carbonation. Crisp clean finish as expected. Nice unusual take on a pilsner.

Pours cloudy straw, generous frothy head and some lacing which dissipates quickly. Apple and citrus fruit on the nose, slight hint of grass. Tastes like mandarin (a LOT like mandarin) medium bitterness and dry palate. Medium carbonation and light body. Just a really well rounded pilsener that I will probably revisit during the Australian summer.

Pastel yellow with a soft haze. Sparse, fine bubbles raise up a soppy, soapy white crown that leaves a messy lace. With a quickly fading (phew!) burst of boiled cabbage out the way the nose emits notes of stonefruit, lychee, dragonfruit, pineapple pulp and something reminiscent of cider vinegar. Sandy, gritty and powdery palest grain flavour and feel give it a base for the hops to work. There is a sourness to this one that grips the saliva glands. Finish is only moderately bitter - I was expecting more aggression. Light fruit; again more sour than sweet with a citrus zing. Very light in body with spritzy carbonation that dulls as it heads south. Not spectacular but a decent lager with a little bit of charm. Not bad! (33cL,

Pours straw-coloured with a large, fading head. Nose shows floral and melon-like hops along with soft clean malt, a faint biscuity note and some spicy characters. Delicate but very enticing and Summery. Similar flavours, more emphasis on the pilsner malt with more pronounced biscuity notes. More melon and stonefruit from the hops along with the spicy and floral characters. Insanely refreshing but perhaps a little too sweet in the finish.

Bottle. Very pale gold with a large white head. Aroma of pineapple, passionfruit, Meyer lemons, grass. Fairly dry with some hay and lots of fruity hops. Firm bitterness with some herbal notes at the end. A lean, aperitif style beer. Pretty good.
