4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottled 10/4/14. Deep black, off white frothy head. Aromas of milk chocolate, toasty coffee, loads of malt and a lick of grassy hops. A strong background of chocolate, coffee and milk with grassy/earthy hops going straight through the middle from start to finish. Beautiful beer.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle.Nose of roast malt, piney hop, light chocolate, and alcohol fumes. Dark brown color with translucent edges and a light tan head. Flavors of roast malt, moderate piney hop, quite fruity, light citrus, and a gentle roast malt finish. Thin-medium body, light on the palate. Certainly a bit of a variant on the US version of the style (given the AUS hopping). Nice, but not really exceptional.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from Capitol Beer & Tap Room. Pours near black with a massive tan head and a treacle aroma. There is a smooth dark molasses flavor with a nicely bitter finish. It all goes together pretty well.

Bottle from Plonk. pours almost black with tiny white head. Floral and grassy hop aroma, lingering bitterness. Just a hint of roast at the end. A nice beer, with emphasis on the IPA over the black.

On tap @ The Trappist. Nearly black in color with tan foam. Kind of sticky and sugary beer. Lots of roast, licorice, and maybe some tar. There’s an earthy hop character to it along with some canned peach, orange rind, and pine. A bit of an ashy, burnt flavor to the finish which at least sort of makes up for the sweetness by providing a strong bitter character. Not sure what I expected, but wasn’t a huge fan.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Deep murky dark dark brown. Pleasant fresh aromas of toffee, canteloupe/rockmelon and grapefruit citrus. The malts are much more forward in the taste. Licorice and honey sweetness, coffee and cigarette ashy and roasty bitterness. Only a slight underlying fruitiness. Not bad.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tap at Bitter Phew. Killer black IPA, sweetness tempers the normal roast grain bitterness. Black pour with tons of lacing. Mild roast grain aroma leads into taste that is equal parts sweet and bitter. Pleasant lingering bitterness (burnt toast) and sweet (dark chocolate).

This is my first Mikkeller, it's.... Well.... Outstanding.
A Black IPA with a crisp and warming tone to the brew. Usually you're either hit with a big hop or a big malt, you're either too dry, or too malted out. But this, I could come back for more and more.
Great flavours, great textures. Thanks guys :')
